Almost free PS3 - Would it work?

    Hi,

After buying a new fancy 40in TV last week I'm now wanting a PS3 so I can play Blu-ray movies, but have kind of run out of money. So I have come up with an plan to get a PS3 for the equalivant of £24. My questions are would this actually work in your opinion and has anybody else tried this?

    The plan...

I have recently finished my 12 month O2 contract and I'm now on the £15 per month simfree thing.

e2save.com are currently doing the the 'O2 200 min + 200 sms 12' month contract for £30 per month where you get where you get the following included:
    Sony Ericsson W580i White
    Sony Playstation 3
    £20 Cashback

The Sony Ericsson W580i currently goes for £85 and Quidco are doing £50 cashback. So my total cash back would be roughly £155 12 Months = About £13 per month. So would work out as £30 - 13 = £17 per month. Compared with my current £15 per month there would only be £2 difference (£24 over the year).

This would of course mean I would have to keep on to my current phone (XDA Orbit) for another year, but I'm quite happy to do this.

Can anybody think of any problems with this?
Any idea how long the PS3 would take to be delivered?
Would O2 transfer my current number over to the new O2 contract for free?

    Cheers,
    Dan.

Sounds like it would work, I did something very similar.
The PS3 arrived in a few weeks.
Remember it will be a while before the QuidCo turns up in your bank so the cash flow would be front loaded.

    Good luck

    sounds like a good plan

Yes good plan and o2 will port your number (they did with mine). Only thing i would say is when i got two 02 contracts through quidco, they didnt tract and i had to escalate them both. Finally got it accepted last month but took 3months for them at o2 to approve it.

As long as your in no rush for your money back its a good idea. I hadnt even thought of doing something like that. Im on there £15 sim only contract too. Might be worth a go after the wedding

    mobiles.co.uk send the ps3 w/ the phone.

Pay £17 a month when you could have it for free, sounds like a bad idea to me!

Get a 12 month free offer instead, some listed on the deals page.

Saves £30 a month, £360 over the year.

Could get a ps3 cheaper than £360? Therefore better off.

But you dont get a free ps3 with this contract do you?
If you get the mobile.co.uk phone he was saying he would only be paying the equivalent of £17 a month for 12months (not £30) and so thats only £204. Can you get a ps3 for that price?

The phone value and the quidco value are roughly the same. So you're comparing £30 a month vs £0 a month.

So in your example the cost of the contract I quoted is actually about -£120.

I've come across a couple of issues to do with my plan:

    1. It takes between 28 and 118 days for the Playstation 3 to arrive. So a bit of a long time to wait.

    2. Keeping the same number doesn't look possible if I stay with O2 as it would then count as an upgrade. I need to stay with O2 as I have my broadband with them. It might be possible to get the deal via an upgrade if I call them, but then wouldn't get the Quidco. Or there is a way of keeping the same number by transfering to a pay as you go phone on another network and then back again, sounds like a bit of a hassle though.

Do it my way and you'll have £300 to spend on a ps3, you should be able to get one for that shouldn't you? Lets say it's £250, that means you've got £50 to cover the interest charged by your overdraft if you need it in the meantime as you won't be better off straight away. This means you can order your ps3 straight away!

Not sure about keeping your number, it's always hassle with these contracts. Personally I'd just change my number but you may be able to switch it to vodafone and take out another free contract on o2 for the broadband, or transfer it to payg and top up £10 every 3 months then sell the credit if you don't need it.

    mobiles2yourdoor.co.uk/con…754

Or take the Prada, will cost you £40 more over the contract but I think it's worth more and you'll have that extra up front saving you interest too.

    e2save.com/con…300

Take one of these or similar to keep your o2 broadband. Will cost you £24 for the year but I think there's £50 quidco and the phone's worth about £50 so you'll be £75 better off too. That could go towards the ps3 or some games and will keep your o2 broadband at the same price.

It was actually from a different shop (onestopphoneshop) which do the same deal but with a bigger choice of phones. In their help and support section is states:

"You will qualify to receive your free gift 28 days after connection providing all the terms and conditions are complied with. Please allow time for your free gift to be sent to you, as this can take up to 90 days and is subject to stock availability."

I can't find any detail for this on the e2save website but I would of thought they would say the same.

I agree, your way would be slight better over the year but I don't fancy having to do the whole cashback thing with having to send in your phones bill in to them every few months to get the cashback, too much hassle. Also, I wouldn't have the money to spend on the PS3 until 12 months time, unless, as you stated I use my overdraft, which I don't really want to do.

Fair enough mate, but if you did two to get the o2 one as well you'd have most of the money straight away from the sale of the phones and the rest to follow very soon with the quidco.

I am sure I read somewhere that someone got their PS3 after 24 days so I would think you would only wait longer if there was a supply issue. Such as if you tried to get a free Wii!

Here is a suggestion for porting the number...

Activate a new O2 on to your existing O2 account and time it so your old handset goes off line by porting the number over to a PAYG sim. Then when the number has ported phone the PAYG customer services. Tell them the coverage is no good and you want a PAC code.

Then call O2 and ask them to port the PAYG number (which is your original O2 number) back to your new O2 account.

Or you could just cancel your current O2 sim, port to a PAYG sim and for the few weeks it takes to then port back to the new O2 just pay the extra £5/month to keep the Broadband running?

I am gutted as I ummed and ahhed about this deal while it was the Nokia 6300 with £20 cashback, free PS3 and £50 Quidco. But now the £20 has gone and Quidco is down to £36.50 again so I am £35 quid or so worse off :-(

    Any e2save customers on here...??

First person to PM me your Name, Postcode and mobile number will get £20 as I will pass you on as my e2save referer as I have just signed up for the PS3 deal.

You have to have been an e2save customer and the number you give me must still be working.
