Alternatives to the dreadful Audible please

I have searched for this already but have not had much success - because people are referring others who ask to the same kind of model - a subscription based service. This is not something I'm interested in.

So, could some kind person please list any sites they know that sell reasonably priced audiobooks? This seems to be a dying market - AudioGo was a very sad loss to me. I just want a source for the biggest choice at decent prices. It's getting so hard now to find sites that don't just link you back through Audible even if they aren't CALLED "Audible.com". I am never going to use that site again - the bitrate was pathetic - and I believe they haven't improved it since I ordered - assuming I was going to get a nice 320 rate like most sites. That is certainly NOT what I got - it's muffled and awful and I fail to comprehend why so many put up with their pitiful quality. It's also hard to find US audiobook download sites that aren't region restricted.

Anyway, any help would be very gratefully received as I use stories to help me sleep.

Thanks for the response but I'm already aware of downpour and it uses the same model as Audible. I really need a site that let's me make individual purchases, not charge me every month for potentially buying nothing.
I listen to audible audio books every day on my phone and can't say that I've ever found the recordings poor or muffled. I download them onto the phone, there is the option to download higher bitrate recording but I find the standard ones perfectly ok. I wouldn't be without audible, it makes driving a much nicer experience.

I wouldn't be without audiobooks - they make bedtimes a much nicer experience. However, seeing as Audible quality is such trash, I'm really after a quality alternative. Looks like I'll be struggling.

Good luck, I hope you find something that suits you. Like you I wouldn't be without the audio books. Have you tried local libraries ? Our one has hundreds of audiobooks on CD.

Thanks. Yeah I will try my local for the CD's but last time I did there was limited selection which is ironic considering it's a very new library. And thanks to the idiot marking me down for having an opinion on #4 How DARE I have an opinion based upon personal experience!! (_;)

Oh well, shame there aren't any non-subscription sites out there to anyone's knowledge. Looks like the library is my best option. Thanks anyway.

Mucho appreciation.
Give podiobooks.com/ a go and support indie authors.
Piratebay, obviously.

I'm aware of that but if it's good I'm not very adverse to paying.
