Amazon doesn't care about scammers does it? Amazing chat conversation with customer services...

I just tried to alert Amazon to a fraud on their site, but they wouldn't deal with me because I'm the husband of the account holder!

It was a clear scam with someone trying to sell GTX 1070's for £200 (usually £400) and a message to email them to complete the order. I started a chat with Amazon as it was the quickest route, and they refused to discuss this with me because I wasn't the account holder - despite the chat not relating to our account or any purchase I'd made.

Amazon is fast becoming a scammers paradise and these idiots seemingly don't care.

Could have just said you were the account holder

Hey Mad,

Read this with interest but I cant find one gtx 1070 listed for under £360 mark even on warehouse deals. You sure its not a 1060?

data protection act they cant discuss account issues if your not the account holder they are just complying with the law

Why didn't you say you were her

Does this HUKD account belong to her or you X) just kidding X)

What account issues? It was a security issue with Amazon as a whole. They should have at least advised on how he could report fraudulent/scam sellers.

They are idiots, OP if you/amazon use social media you shout post that chat log all over.

i had the same problem with paypal on my mums account. shes elderly so i administrator her account. she received an email that looked official and refered to her by her full name.
the email title stated their was unusual activity on her account.
im a computer repairer so very savvy when it comes to tech and scams so rather than open the email i called paypal and simply asked "have you emailed my mum re unusual activity on her account ?"
answer "cannot talk to you as your not the account holder"
again i asked "dont want any info or access to the account, just dont want to open the email and get a virus"
answer " cannot talk to you"
i then said"my mums 81 years old and im her carer, just need to know, simply yes or no, have paypal emailed my mum today ?"
answer "cannot talk to you"
i eventually hung up and opened the email on my android phone (most virus's are made for windows operating systems so cannot affect android as much"
the email was genuine after all and if i hadnt have opened it the scammers could have had a field day.
yes i agree with data protection and confidentially but sometimes companies take it a step too far !

This attempt at comms with Amazon is not account-specific so no DP obligation applies. Possibly the real issue is that Amazon appears to have no obviously accessible "report this listing / seller" function.

you made the chat conta through an account

how did you start the chat with amazon ?
was it from your wifes account ?

Amazon quotes the seller account as being registered to... Max Dick.

i used contact us a while back about a scammer, no reply

Lol what are you talking about? PayPal were being completely reasonable.

not really, they should have asked to speak to or contact the mum for authorisation to deal with the account
unless that part was missed out ofc in the story

Aye, it wasn't an account issue. I was being a decent citizen reporting a scam - nothing to do with a purchase or account.

Yup, just happened to be the one I was logged into as she has Prime.

I can't reply, as I am just the hamster.

So I sent posh chocolates from chocolate shop in France to a girl in Italy. They didn't arrive. I called FedEx. Fedex would not talk to me. They said they would only talk to the chocolate shop. Same deal. To them you are only a related party

reasonable ! glad i don't live next door to you !
all i wanted to know is if they had sent an email ???
how could them telling me "yes or no" be an infringement of data protection ?
i didn't want to know the contents of the email, quite the opposite.
so tell me how they were being reasonable ???

All they needed to say in this instance was "thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will investigate as soon as possible".

I've used chat in the past to discuss issues on my wife's account with no problem.

You could've just said 'Yes I am the account holder'...but you didn't so Amazon response after that is reasonable. Basically you've accessed an account that isn't yours!

Why not just contact them from your account?

You seem to be stubborn for the sake of it

What account issue was the OP wanting to discuss?
regardless of that, everytime I've used amazon chat, the DPA compliance question has been 'Are you the account holder' yes, then continue to discuss the account. Hardly complying with the act!

By asking that Q you are effectively requesting PayPal confirm whether or not that they hold an account for a person or related email address or other ID. In the circumstances quoted it is a reasonable expectation that an organisation should not process such an enquiry. I am sure if you reconsider the wider implications of your Q you may appreciate why it is reasonable for PayPal to respond the way it did.

not at all. ask yourself this, to get to the stage where you actually talk to a real person at paypal, you have to jump through many security hoops ?
and to get to the stage where you have the 4 or 6 digit code to enter into your phone keypad you must already be inside the account !
it was only because i had a male voice that they refused to answer the question

You miss the point. PayPal has correctly indicated that it does not have the authority to respond to non-accountholder.

Why not just log into the paypal account and surely it would alert any issues there?

Don't understand why you didn't just say, Yes i am the account holder.. oO

Because it wasn't an account related issue (it was alerting them to a fraud) and because I'd previously dealt with people on chat who were more than happy to talk to me instead of my wife.

You were on an account that wasn't yours and told them this... No idea why you wouldnt just say yes.

They may still sort the dodgy account but just not speak to you about it.

It's not for them to decide how much or how little they discuss with you. They can't think 'oh, it won't do any harm just telling him this, or telling them that'. They are bound by the data protection laws and have to apply them. It's not your account and I think it's perfectly correct that they don't discuss anything about it with you.

I imagine its a big task to sort. Hopefully most people will use their own discretion.

What is the point of this thread?

Everyone knows its would be illegal under the data protection laws for them to continue to communicate with you.

You are lucky they never shut your wifes account down.

So they can't say "thanks for letting us know, we will investigate - however I cannot assist you in any further issues"

I was reporting a fraud in the quickest way possible. Not only did they refuse to discuss, but also failed to act in terms of addressing the fraud.

Previous agents (on more than one occasion) have talked to me about queries on my wife's account, and the next agent confirmed that the one I spoke to this morning should have acted.

But yeah, I'm looking silly.

During the last chat I found and highlighted 3 other scammers on their site. So I can do that, but the mighty Amazon can't spot them?
