Amazon Kindle Help please.

Just a couple of things please.

Firstly, I have downloaded the kindle for pc application. Does this mean that once I have downloaded books from amazon, they will appear in this window for me to then transfer to the kindle itself?

Secondly, Is amazon the only place you can buy books from? I know there are other e-readers out there so you must be able to get e-books from other places apart from amazon. But are these compatable with the kindle?

I hope I don't sound stupid, I'll just have to pass on these notes to my mother- who the kindle is actually for!!

Thank you all.

I'm afraid it's taking me straight to the homepage again.

I suppose I was asking whether there are 'cheaper' means of downloading books for the kindle, do book torrents exist?

Thank you for that. I need a bit more detail though, I know nothing about this subject.

Where would I get the downloads that I convert?

And it's the usual places....?

So what format do they download as please? If anyone knows. Sorry that I'm asking loads of questions, I just cannot pass on the device to my mum when my knowledge is sketchy.

I thought it was a cheap alternative and then I started looking at dawn french's new book, alan sugar, stephen fry etc and they were still £10 a pop.

I have a specific list. Would you be so kind to help me search for these particular titles?

Thank you again.

those books are price fixed and this is a contoversial subject at the moment , all the classics are free and most other books are near the same price as paperback , sites like smashwords offer a free ebook section , it isnt really a cheap alternative but it offers a different reading experience , holding upto 3,500 books , 3g net use , instant purchasing , font can be enlarged to suit your eyes. if you enjoy reading on holiday it is perfect , a pile of books , travel guides , language guide , google map - all on a box the size of a dvd case

To search titles just go back to kindle store and add the book title you are looking for in the search box

Original Poster

No, I know how to do the title search which is why I have a rough idea of prices. A couple of titles are reasonable, like the girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy.

Just the autobiographies etc are a tad.....pricey. Nevermind though. If I can find out how to do it as a torrent, I may investigate.

I dont think you can convert stuff due to the drm . amazon can remove things easily too as everything gets back to them

the kindle format allows you to change the font , size spacing etc , stuff added on pdf`s doesnt allow this .
it also has an audiobook facility with built in speakers

aha I see. Well I'll have a look on those sites. Do all the sites sell chart books?

I may have to do a bit of price comparison.

Ive only ever bought from amazon , all my other stuff is trying out new authors for free .There is often books in the 79p range - stephen leather has 3 at the moment , which are also free on pdf on his website. if you watch the forum you can spot the books that are going cheap and just grab them , you can also sample any book on amazon to see if you like it - you get about 10%
you can pick up well known crime authors for about £3 on amazon

I've converted several books from epub to mobi format and those have turned out fine, you lose the text to speech function but works well. Also converted some PDF's but they turn out poor so just use them natively but don't work too well if they are detailed PDF's.
