I am in need of a new amp but really know nothing about them. All i know is that i have 2x 1000 watt speakers. What do i need to look for when buying an amp that be able to cope with my speakers? Thanks

well, you wont be getting a 1000watt amp.....

OK
the cdplayer is aiwa xc-300
sony eon link system fm-am tuner ST-SE500
GenEXXA 10 band stereo graphic equalizer
And the speakers say QXF 15Vi Bass 400w RMS 1000w peak

My budget is whichever is cheapest!
thanks:thumbsup:

a good budget amp is the cambridge audio from richer sounds

So 400W speakers...not 1000w speakers
You put 1000w through them and they will be long gone!

Personally I cant find the speakers online to get some figures, but I would go for something a little more punchy then the Cambridge recommended above as it only outputs 25w per channel, and if you don't have enough power for the speakers you might struggle to get a decent sound at all. I'd say depends on the size of the cone as well though on that.

I am by no means an expert however, I would suggest heading over to www.avforums.com and asking there, and then maybe looking on their classified section for a second hand bargain.

OP plainy doesnt run a disco!, richer sounds has more options, but may just want something to make the stuff they have work as a normal entertainment system, for a low price

by all means, spend more, get more power

Oh I wasn't implying that or stepping on your toes, that unit especially for the price is very good.
But I use to have some big Technics Speakers which were 500w RMS per speaker with a separate bass/sub chamber which was another 100w RMS per speaker (TOTAL 600w RMS per speaker, but could run without bass/sub). Now these on a 50w per channel amplifier barely done anything, thus the sound was muffled and if turned up caused clipping...thus could damage the speakers.

So suppose it would depends on what the min is to power the speakers of the OP.
Also a reason why I suggested AVForums...as they know their stuff much better then I do!

+1 awoodhall2003

we dont know what the op expects, or uses it for, or wants to spend (had to coax the bit about low budget)

true some speakers need good gear to run them (have mission floorstanders myself)

with an aiwa cd, genexxa EQ, i cant find any info on QXF speakers at all, so will say budget (and wont live up to near 400w being driven), and made a guess its just used as a living room sound system, and should be ok on a budget amp (wonder where the other amp went>?) i cant say i would even spent the 70 quid on an amp, I would just buy a small nice looking unit new for the living room

I have some AE Floorstanders as well, beautiful sound from them, so nice actually I put off buying an active subwoofer for about 2months! As the AE's are sandfilled, on spikes on concrete and rear firing by a wall thus they got a lot of bass!

That is the thing, I think it depends on cone size with power as well, as the Technics I tried to power before had 3 tiers, and the main cone was 15"!

But yeah as you say depends on needs, ie is the OP listening to heavy metal at loud volumes, or a bit of Simon and Garfunkel at average levels? (Like I was earlier :-D)

I think i blew my last amp. well iturned my volume up and the amp stopped working so i really want something thats louder than your average home hifi. no heavy metal but mostly reggae and dancehall music and loud volumes!x
