    Coals to Newcastle;-)

    Hiya,

I've been 4 times to Amsterdam and never booked accomodation before going as it's cheaper to just book into somewhere when you arrive. There are lots of hotels of various standards depending (like everything in life) on how much you want to spend.

When you arrive at the Train station if you head straight out of the entrance you will see (about 100 yards away right in front of entrance) the corner of two main roads. There are at least two shops there that are wholly dedicated to placing people into accomodation. You just go in and tell them what you want and they have a list of 1000's of places - pick the one you want and they phone the hotel to confirm and you head out to your digs You don't pay the shop anything they just get a small commision from the hotels.

Tomorrow I'll try and post a picture or link courtesy of google earth if your interested?

Get to the red light area & into the Bulldog Hotel

It's about £60 per night (B&B) for a double room - very secure & very nice.

You can smoke/drink in the bar & your on the doorstop to all the bars/restaurants - been there about 5 times now !!

    Thanks for the advice guys....

Anyone have any views on places to see / visit during the stay?

Think there is a holiday in at the train station. Very nice & not too seedy.(depends what you are after!) . Very close to all the sights and sounds and just round the corner from Canalstrasse!!

    You can go "Window Shopping"

Has anyone stopped in the Qbic hotel in amsterdam? Just found it on the net and they look funky and modern and just very simple ???

big group of us went there and booked into the white tulip hostel, me and the girlfriend checked out minutes later as the place was a disgrace, stayed in the nh barbizon for 3 nights. very very nice, great views, close to the train station, rld and dam square.
If you are going to go to a show, go to the casa del rosa, most expensive but a much more professional act

Oh..and keep an eye out for the completely open air urinals that pop out of the ground at night.

Makes having a wee a spectator sport!!

have you booked yet smithy? going there myself december with a couple of mates, booked the ibis stopera which seems very reasonable, but I can cancel that anytime at no cost if somewhere better comes along. you've probably seen it already, but trip advisor tripadvisor.com/ seems to be the best place for reviews.

Yes, have booked in at Maes bed and breakfast.

We finally found somewhere which had good reviews, location, price and didnt have shared toilet and shower !!!

It is rated as no 6 out of 72 b&b's in the dam.

We didnt book the qbic purely because of the location, it sounded like it was a fair distance out from the centre.

To be fair, unless you pay £100 or more then the hotels in amsterdam seem to be awful and have very negative reviews !!
We use tripadvisor all the time and thank god we do! Some of the SO CALLED hotels sounded disgraceful, yet were charging ridiculous money.

Oh well, i'm all booked up and sorted !!

have to agree, alot of the hotels in the dam look awful. I reckon most just make up their star rating especially the 3 star ones. tripadvisor saved me from booking a nasty looking place too, it looked ok and the reviews on the booking website were ok, however tripadvisor ranked it something like 312th out of 320 hotels and the reviews were terrible. That ranking system on tripadvisor is really useful, although the 3rd ranked hotel ain't looking too good, wonder what my mates would say if i booked them in there lol
    anyway your b&b looks nice.
    Hope you enjoy it
