Android and WiFi Can I access files from PCs on my Home Network?

Im considering buying an Android phone and wondering what I can do via the WiFi Network connection.
If I use the phone at home can I access shared files on any Windows PCs that are part of the home network?
I presume that I might need to use an app to allow this; can someone recommend one that does it?

    Thanks for the links.
Are there any apps that allow you to stream audio or video from a networked PC to the phone?
I suppose I’d like to be able to browse for files and then stream them rather than copy them.
It would be ideal if I could browse my iTunes (or other Windows audio application) Library by Meta data (Genre, Artist etc) and select which ones to stream that way.

Thanks again dontasciime; rep left.
Looking at the links you gave make me realise that Android is right up my street.
The first app is purely a Remote for iTunes and doesn’t stream but having that functionality alone would be really good.
The spotify app looks excellent to and this level of synchronization seems the way to go.
I’m seriously considering trying to get the T-mobile deal tomorrow that comes with an Android phone and a data package.
