As most apps are tiny downloads, but then consume a large amount of data when installed, what exactly do you intend to do with your phone to avoid data charges?

You can get internet usage apps which let you know how much you have used for the month.

Or if you are after a lot of apps download them through a wireless network if you have 1

Who're you with? If you're with Three, you can access your Remaining Allowance through the mobile.three.co.uk site, so you can keep track of things easily. But, that aside, yeah, 500MB is surprisingly lots. It's 16MB per day, which unless you're streaming music or video, you won't get anywhere near. Do install Opera Mini though, since that compresses inbound webpages, which brings your internet browsing usage down to just a few KB per page.

Also, don't forget that lots of apps once installed are constantly sending and receiving information to the net. You may want to dissable 'background data' in settings\accounts & sync when it's not needed, or at least keep an eye on your data usage.

But as already mentioned, most downloads are very small files anyway, so shouldn't use much bandwidth.
