    Android updates on Kodi boxes

I am going to buy a box this week. I notice a lot of them have Android 5 or even 4. Is it not possible to update Android on these boxes or are you stuck with the version it came with?

Does it matter much if it's stuck to Android 5.1 for example? If it works now it'll work in the future too right?

You should be able to upgrade mine comes up with a message to upgrade from time to time.

It is more a case of the cost to develop the new version for the box.

If it is a cheap android box from China, you may get a few small updates to fix bugs, but won't usually get an update to a full Android revision. They just expect you will buy another cheap box next year with the newer software.

The big players are more likely to upgrade older boxes to new versions for a while.

Android 5.1 will work fine for a few years, but eventually software will come out that is not compatible with older versions. Even now after being released in 2013, Android 4.4 is still the most used version.

So 5.1 should be good for a while yet.

    Thanks for the reply.
Can you give examples of 'the big players'? (Other than Amazon I suppose)
Currently all the boxes I am looking at seem to be generic ones from China with different names on the case but otherwise look similar.

    Pretty much Amazon / Google.

    I have a A95X which I paid £24 for.

It does everything I need it to, but I won't hold my breath for Android 7.

Whereas I won't be impressed if my Galaxy S7 doesn't get Android 7 and possible 8.
