That's right, we're going to be seeing a huge amount of anime box sets making it over here this year. Time for the UK loving anime deal hunters to get some work! :-D

Want to hear the best news? Of course you do!
Berserk, a classic anime that originally came out around a decade ago, will finally be coming out over here later this year. The bad thing about this is that it isn't going to be released as a box set straight away... :-(

The other non box set things worth reporting involve Bleach and FMA (Fullmetal Alchemist): Bleach should be coming out over here to give Naruto some competition, while the FMA movie will be coming out later this year.

Here's a list of box sets I've found that have or are going to come out this year:

Gunslinger Girl (2003) - 13 episodes, 1 box set
Hellsing (2001) - 13 episodes, 1 box set
Samurai X: Deluxe Complete Collection (1997-2001) - 10/10 OVA collection + 1 crappy movie

.hack//SIGN (2002) - 26 episodes, 2 box sets
.hack//Legend of the Twilight (2003) - 12 episodes, 1 box set
Elfen Lied (2004) - 14 episodes, 1 box set
Excel Saga (1999) - 26 episodes, 1 box set
Gantz (2004) - ??? episodes, ??? box set(s?)
Gungrave (2003) - 26 episodes, 1 box set
Last Exile (2003) - 26 episodes, 1 box set
Trigun (1998 ) - 26 episodes, 1 box set
Samurai Champloo (2004) - 26 episides, 1 box set
Wolf's Rain (2003) - 30 episodes, 2 box sets

Gungrave getting a box set over here has annoyed me somewhat after I got hit by customs and ended up spending around £75 to import it. :whistling:

I've never understood the whole anime thing!!

Me neither. I thought it was a comedy show when I saw the animation and story line of one show...

Kinda O/T but I have a samurai champloo standee I'm gonna have to offload at somepoint if anyones interested. It really don't do with my new decorating.

Nice to see more anime boxsets over here, but I mostly buy from abroad anyway when I'm after something specific

I own a couple of Studio Ghibli films...they are weird! :? Daughter loves 'em tho!

Hmm better than nothing, I just wish they finished series that only had part releases like Fist Of The North Star

Well i never understood people liking shows like Top Gear, or reality shows like Big Brother, its all down to opinion, and its just another form of media.

ryouga

Exactly, Thats all my comment was, A difference of opinion.

And I like top gear...........................:-D

And I don't like Big Brother.

Meh its ok, I see it when my flatmate sees it, but its not something I will see personally unless I have too.

Still its better than crap like BB

While I can't explain how manga and anime started in Japan (plenty of sites do that), I can explain the basics.

Anime isn't considered kiddy over there like it is over here. There are shows aimed at different audiences, just like what we watch on TV over here isn't all aimed at one age group. Even hentai (pervert in JP - animated porn is the general meaning) is considered normal in Japan.

Example: Berserk aired 10 years ago on TV in Japan. It shows lots of death throughout, including one of the most disturbing endings I've ever seen - Mass murder, mutilation, rape...pretty much everything you'd expect to freak you out. Is all anime like that? Nope, there's plenty of anime out there without a drop of blood being shown.

How did anime become huge outside of Japan you ask?
There are many people from all over the world who set up fansub groups for people who live outside of Japan. These groups translate and subtitle anime every week (anime airs one day every week), a fair amount of the popular shows getting fansubs on the day after the episode aired in Japan. Pretty impressive, huh?

seen beserk FANTASTIC STORYLINE - dont like reading comics so stopped at where griffiith becomes one of the god hand episode 26 me thinks

currently watching BLEACH (must watch!!!)

and a bit of naruto too lol

heres a few more u should check out

NINJA SCROLL
ONE PIECE
DEATH NOTE

Yeah, I quickly got bored of the manga. Death > Rape > Death > Rape...an endless amount of pointless murder and rape.

Death Note won't be coming out here for quite a bit, it hasn't finished airing in Japan yet!

man u should just get it by ''other means''

Who said I'm not waiting for episode 34 to come out on Tuesday? I simply said it wouldn't be making it over here anytime soon.

Watched the anime in the Matrix box set. Quite liked it but I can't say which style I like the most.

A good show, which comes on the sci-fi channel is Cowboy Bebop, fantastic stuff for anyone who likes anime or sci-fi in general.

What do you guys think the FMA box set will be priced at when it gets announced? I'm betting it'll be around the £100-120 area, possibly even more. :-(

The show itself is still amazing to watch today, with one of the best endings ever. I spent £58 on the 2 CB box sets a couple of years back...very expensive when the DVD quality isn't amazing!

Thanks for taking the time to explain what Anime is etc.

So its basically like Animated/cartoon versions of real life events?

I can sort of see why people like it, I used to like watching sonic when I was growing up etc, If these are more graphic (Murders etc) then thats just an adult version?

I like the Final Fantasy style of Anime. What Films would you recommend?

@stora: There's one or two very easy suggestions I can give you.

]Final Fantasy VII: Last Order - This 25 minute OVA came out as an extra with Japanese special edition of Advent Children. It's a little insulating that the extra managed to be better than the main feature, but I suppose Last Order did retell and add to the best part of the famous FFVII story.

].hack/SIGN - Well, the plot is about a MMORPG. Very good anime.

There are plenty of good anime out there about a group of friends/comrades fighting together against evil. Not sure what aspect of RPGs you're most interested in, the real answer to your question is hidden in your answer.

That's basically it. You have to accept that the plot and fight scenes do tend to go beyond what's considered normal, but that's the beauty of anime - It can show you what real life series and film often do not.

Example: Gungrave is the anime equivalent of The Godfather in many ways. Two best friends rise from street thugs to the top of a criminal empire, one sharp as a knife and one a skilled killer, ending up getting to the stage where both consider each other their enemy.

Do you like the sound of it so far? It could be mistaken for your normal Hollywood movie plot. The only difference in Gungrave is the supernatural elements (coming back from the dead) and unrealistic gun fights.

To give another example of the variation anime offers and help you understand in greater detail, here's a quick (...) list of the five shows I'm downloading weekly right now:

------

Bleach: This story is about a teenage Japanese kid called Kurosaki Ichigo. His life changes after encountering a Shinigami (Death God) and being forced to take her powers in order to save the life of himself and his family.

The above may sound like it's aimed at adults in Japan - It isn't, Bleach is a shonen series (translates to young boy), aimed at 12-13 year olds in Japan. The funny thing is that people seem to enjoy it who are 20 something!

Death Note: We follow Yagami Light in the world of Death Note. The Death Note world is the same world we live in, the difference being the existence of Shinigami and a notebook that can kill any you know the face of before writing. Light wants to remove everyone he considers evil and become the God of the new world, however a world famous detective known only as L stands in his way...

Death Note will become THE anime series for adults when it reaches the US/Europe. It's a psychological crime thriller of the highest level that makes you think what would happen if this happened in the real world.

Darker than BLACK: Contracts from some unknown thing started to exist after "Hell's Gate" suddenly appeared in Japan, allowing normal people to somehow make this contract and gain a supernatural power...seemingly losing their humanity by doing so. The contract can be anything from eating after using their power to breaking their fingers.

Darker than BLACK (DtB) lives up to its name, you will see a fair amount of disturbing stuff. Not a remix of X-Men for kids with strict parents!

Naruto - Shippuden: Shippuden continues 3 years after where the old Naruto series left us. Naruto wants to become Hokage (number #1 ninja), but more than that he wants to save his best from his own demons.

Shippuden is the same type of anime as Bleach.

Romeo x Juliet: Romeo and Juliet remixed in the floating city of Neo Verona. You don't need me to say anymore...right?

Yes, anime also extends to Romeo and Juliet.
