You cant really stop them, you need to just allow your spam filter to sort it out, the best spam filter ive found on web based email is the googlemail one, if you use outlook/outlook express there are numerous spam filters available and many internet security packages come with one.

The most important thing to do is NEVER EVER click on a link in a suspicious email, for two reasons:
    1) It could be a virus on the linked page that installs when you open it.
    2) Many have id numbers in the link (like a referral one does) and by clicking on this you are letting them know that the email address is a) active and b) Used by someone who clicks on links.

If it gets really bad you may need to set up a new email address, the most efficient way of doing this I find is buy a cheap domain name and use the free email accounts that come with it, these can be had for £2-£3 a year, what I do is set them up and have it forwarded to my regular webmail which I keep for people/companies I know are trustworthy, and sorted automatically into a seperate folder to sort at my leisure , then if a address star ts getting spammed I can simply delete it from my domains control panel.

I also have a seperate domain where I simply set it up as a catch all email account so as I can put any prefix to my doman eg [email protected] that way I can create disposable emails on the fly for freebies/comps that are restricted to one per email address, this is forwarded to a seperate webmail account so as I can check for any activation links. The best domain for this sort of account is one thats not a word but a seemingly random mixture of letters and numbers (but easy to remember eg. D34L5.com).
