Another amazing feat of engineering at Chernobyl.

With the original (emergency) sarcophagus losing integrity and reaching the end of the intended lifespan, a new form of protection is being put in place to contain the threat of radioactive material leaks for circa 100 years. The new structure is an arch measuring 275m in width - 108m in height. It will be moved to site by hydraulics, and known as the New Safe Confinement.

What else would you like to see encased in 400,000 cubic metres of concrete and over 7,000 tonnes of steel - then 30 years later, covered over to further reduce the chances of that whatever lies within having an opportunity to escape?

I'd like to see David Cameron entombed in there

The mention of the sarcophagus got me thinking. Imagine in two or three thousand years time, after this site is unearthed by some intrepid Indiana Jones type archaeologist, and a disaster is unleashed upon the world from within the tomb.

I doubt this earth will have any life forms on it by that time though!

It has already had a devastating effect on the local wildlife.

    one or two hukd members,
but I think naming them is against the rules.

    Fukushima would be a start!

What stops the nuclear waste seeping into the ground as it is impossible to reinforce the protection underneath?

    Harsh, but fair ;).

Too little too late and paid for by the world community and not just in monetary terms - contrast this with Sadddam's weapons of mass destruction that never existed
How did they ever get away with this?
Surely it was tantamount to crimes against humanity if not a crime against the planet?

i just dont like the colour can they make another

We are building one here, no British decision maker has made a cast iron guarantee on oath to have his/her head chopped off unequivocally if there would be an accident yet.

How can hiroshima and nagasaki been rebuilt?

Where is all the thousands of years deadly radiation there?

Nicola Sturgeon, Alex Salmond and Barney the Dinosaur.
With enough food and water to sustain them for the 30 years.
That way Barney can irritate them as much as they do me.

Have you ever really looked at the incredible stupidity behind producing nuclear waste that can't be got rid off.

It doesn't matter how deep they bury it or how much concrete they encase it in - there's no safe place - we've got earthquakes happening where they've never happened before, sinkholes appearing all over the place etc, so if mother earth shifts her plates she'll crack open anything in her way - but eejits keep building more of them and producing more waste.

Off topic but ive I've not been on holiday for like 12 years and id love to go to prepyat or however its spelled, the chernobyl ghost town.

They have been working on that dome for a long time beside the reactor, what you tend tend to hear of is all the tunnels beneath it, many men died tunneling beneath to cool it and stop it leeching downwards. Fukashima (which I am sure I've spelled wrong) in similarly in need of action down below, the damage to the ocean and threat to the water table from that is massive.

ENtirely different scenario first off the type of radiation used in the bomb has a shorter life secondly they were detonated in the air to cause maximum damage across a wider area.

Sinkholes and earthquakes? Who cares about that when we have the most dangerous nuke facility in Europe if not the world, good old yep change its name from windscale so people forget about that, then fill it full of swimming pools and just dump all your crap in there out of sight, out of mind and a big accident waiting to happen.

Ahh the stupidity of man and they want to build more lol!

My spelling is **** today I blame beer but my points still stand if anyone can be bothered to decipher them

They had to replace millions of tons of soil; also radioactivity was dispersed but this Chernobyl is one highly active huge lump.
