    Another antivirus question

What is you recommendation for a free internet (AV) security programme.

I don't have a Barclays bank account this year. I don't want to use the Microsoft product, I will supplement my scans with Malwarebytes and CCleaner, I am not a heavy PC user and do not frequent unusual sites i do not know, I will use Utorrent though, but scan each download.

I want to avoid a paid package is possible, what are you recommendations? I appreciated a paid package will generally be better than free.

Avast free seems to have ok reviews.

    Avast

I did see ok reviews for that, do you want to expand?

Avast - no need to scan downloads manually either.

As above said...Avast is the best free program.

    Not really lol.

Personally the biggest virus is the user, I'm just using built antivirus and browse carefully etc..

However I have used Avast loads in the past, It's great for a free option.

Some will recommend Avg but that's a terrible solution that causes all sorts of issues, It's more like bloatware and loads of false/positives etc..

I like Avast better than mse but because I browse safe and careful what I download I'm happy.

Why do you not want to use the Microsoft product out of interest? I've used it since it came out and in conjunction with the other systems you mention never had a problem. Also find it very lightweight and not very resource hungry unlike some other AVs (hello Kaspersky) that I have used in the past.

thanks, its the way i'm leaning, Avast seems to be coming out top and looks like the direction I will go. Yeah I agree, the user is generally the worst problem, but as said in my OP, Im a pretty safe internet user.

From what i have read recently (and the above) I think that Avast comes out ahead of Microsoft as a free AV package. My desktop is ok so the resources taken by whatever choice should not really be a factor.

I currently use Kaspersky paid package and like it and it does not cause any resource issues. Unfortunately it runs out in 4 days.

It comes out way ahead of MSET which generally comes bottom of all the latest tests and even MS admitted that people should now use an alternative product

Check to see if your bank offer a free antivirus solution, Barclay's give you free Kaspersky Internet Security.

TBF the last time I used Kaspersky was about ten years ago so not exactly a fair comment I guess (but once stung and all that...). I've used Microsoft AV for years now and never had an issue. I still stand by the fact the the best AV is the user - common sense will always beat any AV.
