    Another Central Heating Problem!!

I hope someone more clued up than me can help me out with this one.

Basically my central heating in the house wont come on on its own, it will only come on when the hot water is on. This is all well and good but then when the hot water is where it should be, the heating switches off and then wont come back on again (unless i drain the hot water through a tap etc to bring the HW back on again)

Am i doing something stupid?? Surely i should be able to have central heating seperate to Hot Water?

You may have a Y valve that switches between hot water and heating depending on which is selected.

Maybe this is faulty / sticking. See if you can find it and tap it with something or see if it has a manual override.

Im sure i had a similar problem a couple of years ago.

IF its the same thing i believe it was a diaphragm between the hot water and central heating sides of the unit that was leaking. Unfortunately i dont think its something you will be able to fix yourself. I dont *think* its a particularly expensive bit of kit though.

Hope somebody comes up with a more pleasant solution for you

where will this likely to be located ? (assuming there is one?)

Sounds like your priority valve has seized! you might be able to free it of with a spanner. The valve would usually be by by storage tank if you have that sort of system, but in the end it would probably need a plumber to have a butchers!

follow your main hot water pipe and heating pipe back to the boiler, the last thing you should get to is the Y valve, is it a combi boiler?

i think greg is probably right - sticking/knackered zone valve is a likely target....have a look around the boiler or up in the loft/airing cupboard near the cylinder for a box plumbed in...if the motor's knacked it can usually be swapped easily and without any plumbing work.

Pass, i have no idea. I had a problem a few weeks back i got solved on here because my radiators werent getting very hot. Changed a dial on the boilder and that solved that. Easy enough but i didnt know there was a removeable panel

the only thing i can find even remotely like what im looking for is a little box next to the water tank. It has two lights on it , one for domestic hot water, and one for central heating. This also has a switch on it underneath for AUTO and MID (whatever that is) and its set to MID. Would this be what im looking for?

that sounds like the divertor valve, try moving the switch manually, you may find you have to push it for a few seconds, it is not like a normal on/off switch, once done your heating should come on, if this works it may start working once again but it will still need replacing but you can do it manually until you can get it replaced, if you are on a service contract it should be free and only takes 15 mins to change.

should that not be set to auto? I should maybe stay schtum as these guys obviously know a wee bit more than me :-D

if its a combi, its probably the diaphragm(costs about £15 and a bit of confidence to replace yourself!) on the diverter valve. if it's a normal boiler with a tank it's probably a dodgy zone valve.

Old style non combi 3 way position, diverter valve
