my comment covered it though, ie 2/3 deaths from that legal high drug and now its banned simples,

    terrible shame -

why though in these incidents - when they get in the news - do the the kiddies always seem to be with grandparents ? -

i dont get it, ive had my dog 4 years and even tho i trust her with my children, i never leave them in the same room together (just incase), even if i go to the loo the dog gets put in the kitchen

I think it would work different in this case, not so easy to hid a dog, can hide a few pills in your pocket easy! dont think they would ever do that though

+1 we had a little toy poddle, kids could kick it out the way easy, but I still shut him away when I was not in the room, he was a very gentle natured dog too but you never know what could make your dog snap, until its too late, I am personally more of a cat person, usually people tell me how dangerous it is to have cats with kids, especially when they are younger, but how often do you hear about cats killing babies?

keep the dogs, get rid of the kids, they only grow up spoilt, lol

    Very sad

Once a dog over steps the mark - which is what mine did last year when he snapped at the bairns neck and left a mark, i knew i had to put him to sleep. I had the dog well before the bairns were born - and it absolutely destroyed me. Hardest decision i've ever had to make. The problem with most of these fatal attacks, is the dog has usually snapped and warned the child previously. Sad to say, but i think it's the owners fault in most cases.

Seriously, you think texfitz was in the wrong for putting the dog down?

"Through no fault of it's own" Does that mean it wasn't the dogs fault it bit the child.

Maybe if more people thought like texfitz then less of these attacks would be happening.

Yeah, re home it with someone who doesn't have kids. Until one of their family or friends comes round with their children. It would also be a risk taking it for a walk where it could meet children. Plus, it's not just children that might be attacked, it's adults too.

how many times do you hear "my dogs as soft as a brush, the kids jump all over it" etc,etc and it wold never hurt a fly, yeah they are all as soft as a brush till the day they turn but it obviously makes a dog owner feel a good one, when they say the theirs wouldnt hurt a fly, a dog can turn and do damage, any dog

It's ok to have free speech when you have a valid answer. To say something just to get a rise out of someone is damn right childish!!! Unfortunately, there are too many trouble makers on this site intent on arguing.

Vibeone is another one of those trouble makers. BTW thanks peodude for your support.

I made a statement based on my opinion.

Dogs can be rehomed when owners are responsible enough to know they can't cope. You had your dog before you had your children......maybe after the first snap you should have taken some advice before you needed to put him to sleep.

U did the right thing it must of hurt like hell, your experience shows that they may be pets but they r dogs afterall and they can not rationalise like we can, my friend has a staffy and he is so soft and gental but my m8t is very very strickt with ppl and the dog. The dog is never left in a room with very young or very old ppl, the dog is 5yrs old and never shown any agreshion ever but the rule still stands and is enforced always

Excuse me, for your information, there were no "first snaps". There was one, and that was enough! My wife is a Veterinary nurse - is her advice not good enough? I suppose you are more qualified?

So if i had re-homed him, how would that work? With someone who has no kids? Please explain and dig a bigger hole for yourself!

who's digging a hole ? I expressed my opinion and know many people who own dogs that were deemed unsuitable for homes with children and now lead happy, non agressive lives with their childless owners

I don't see how anyone could leave a dog on its own with a baby. We have a jack russel and when my 1year old cousin comes, he will get on the floor but we will take every precaution to keep the dog away. The dog is gentle, but can see that as the dog has been the only one for 10years on its own getting the attention, that when the baby comes in it gets abit jealous. This is no doubt the same for every dog which has been cared for on its own.

Would never leave the dog and baby alone together. But could never have the dog put down either, it is not the dogs fault. If it gets jealous about the baby getting the attention why not ask a relative or friend if they would like to take ownership of the dog? It is the way the dog has been treated and brought up throughout its life within the family environment which gives it the jealous nature if its been brought up as kinda being the "baby" of the family.

But the cases are sometimes family members pets. Lets say you gave the dog to your brother. Does that then mean that you will never go and visit your brother with the baby?

no, these people are childless and when friends with children visit the dogs are not left alone with the children ever.......that makes for responsble dog ownership

In that case we'll ban cars as well since there are too many muppets that own them as well.Like a car a dog if controlled correctly and is in the right enviroment will not harm anyone. The owner made the error of not been in control of the animal and will be punished for it. To ban dogs because of irresponsible people you might as well ban everything.

This is one of these subjects that always causes conflict.

The story in the OP is just tragic
