I still don't understand how in 2014 we can just "lose" a plane.

Hope that by some miracle the plane was landed safely and everyone on board will be rescued.

Sadly, despite fantastic technology, bad weather will make the plane difficult to find.

A plane can only be 'lost' if someone wants it to be lost.

the whole process of pinpointing anything is done based on markers the wider spaced they are the bigger the area you need to look in, planes send a signal out at set intervals but they are moving fast and hight and way they are destroyed will make a difference where they land.

I've read loads of conspiracy nutters on twitter going on today about how can you lose a plane yet track a mobile phone, well a phone is in constant contact with the network via a series of markers, the mobile phone masts which are everywhere, got 15 within a 10 min walking radius of my home so its easy for them to figure out what area you are in.

I get what you're saying, but it still seems mental. Surely there's some sort of sat nav system on every plane relaying their location back to the ground? If not then there should be. Basically this shouldn't be able to happen IMO.

they have GPS but they don't send out a constant signal they just kind of ping at a set time so big areas they can get lost in, maybe there's a technical reason for not having continuous contact, maybe its less about the planes and more the systems trying to track them all, all the processing power needed for a constant stream of data from all of the planes who knows, but it was all explained last time, the oceans are the hardest places to find planes, took france 2 years to find one of theirs in the Atlantic.

I can see the point from both sides, I don't think I'd want to be stuck on a plane not in full control especially if I'd experienced malfunctions and small electrical fires before

Suggestion: Find better sources of material for your conspiracy theory-based nutters

If planes are destroyed, they will not land at all... except in pieces; then it is not much of a landing, but gravity causing the pieces to fall from the sky.

PS. There are not many mobile telephone masts in the middle of the ocean as there are not many schools & homes to bombard with radio waves at close proximity.

Perhaps geostationary satellites are more useful in remote areas.

A Brit also believed to be on the plane & we have to expect an unhappy ending to this.

And where the black box/plane lands will be miles away from last known position so difficult to find, what exactly is the point in your reply?

Surely planes can't simply go missing, Their has to be something or someone behind it, I suspect some sort of cover up.

Only things that could possibly make them disappear would be a powerful bomb that vaporized everything or some sort of wormhole to another dimension.

flying used to be the safest mode of transport but is quickly losing that status with the number of planes that have gone down.

If that was directed at me, the point of replying is the purpose of a web-based Forum.

The "Black Box" (neither black, nor a box) Flight Recorder is not used to locate the wreckage; it is used to analysis why a problem with the aircraft occurred.

Yes, it may descend & land near the rest of the wreckage, but looking for survivors, or pieces of fuselage & other fragments of the aircraft is easier than looking for an object the size of the Flight Recorder (that may well still be inside the main body of the aircraft anyway).

it has a transmitting beacon in it so can lead them to a crash site if its near it, but then you know that. My point was hight and speed etc would affect where the hell the plane is from its last known position making it hard to find anyway, I'm sure the search area will be massive
