Anti-virus and stuff for my laptop?

    Afternoon all.

Hubby has just treated me to a laptop which I have been dying for, for ages - it has McAffee security centre on it, is that enough to keep my lappy protected?
And is there anything else I need or any other tips you kind HUKD'ers can offer me to keep it working nicely? I haven't a clue about these things!

    Thanks

    Perfect set up for me would be;

Sunbelt personal firewall or Kerio Personal firewall

    Avast anti virus

    Spybot search and destroy

    malwarebytes

    that would keep ya as clean as possible and totally free all of them;

    Download from file hippo.

However if you choose to use avast you would have to remove McAffee as you cant have 2 anti-virus'

    Hope thats helps

Forgot to add CC cleaner is a handy programme for "Cleaning Carp" hence the wonderful name

If your laptop came bundled with a trial version then you may need to purchase some protection. However, if your laptop has Anti-Virus pre-loaded (assuming the case) for a year or more then I think you should be fine.

A visit to pcdecrapifier.com may be useful!

Make sure Windows is up to date by letting Windows Update automatically install updates. That'll help keep you safe.

The biggest tip though, is just to always be on your guard. You don't need a virus scanner or anti-spyware if you're savvy enough to not be fooled into letting any nasties install themselves in the first place. Easiest rule is, if you don't know what something is, don't open it. If someone sends you a file, ask what it is before running or opening it, and if a website offers you a download, make sure it's soemthing you actually went to that site to get before letting it run. Also, don't ever think that because you have a virus protection that you're more than only slightly protected. Anti-virus only counters some 90% of known viruses, and known viruses are seldom less than a few weeks old. The only way to keep safe from all viruses is to be careful.

Thamks very much guys, will look into it all later :-D

I bet you wish you hadnt asked.Mcafee will be fine unless you spen all day visiting porn sites and downloading dodgy P2P files,Just make sure you have automatic updates turned on and that you firewall is also turned on,When Mcafee runs out get rid of it and use something free like AVG or Avast,Download the Mcafee removal tool download.mcafee.com/pro…exe

and save it somewhere,Then when you want to remove Mcafee just run this and it will remove it completey.

Thank you, I just found out the McAffee is only for another 11 days.
I don't mind doing the work. I am just a complete tech noob.
I have heard of some of these programmes before so will start the process later when kiddies are in bed.
I do regularly download things from Demonoid and WarezBB so want my computer to stay safe, my other laptop seemed to be a bit of a mess with all sorts of bits and pieces - want to keep this one nice :-D

Just make sure when you download something to right click on the file and choose scan before you open it,I use AVG and have never had a single problem,And remember to use the Mcafee removal tool as when you put something else on it may conflict with what Mcafee left behind,

You should be aware that Windows Firewall is useless and can easily be bypassed even by schoolboy keyloggers.

Avast is nice and free, but contains no firewall - I now use Avast myself due to costs.

If you can afford it, there is no better AV software than Bullguard. This contains Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Firewall, Email Spam Protect and Data Backup all in one package for £44.95 per year (or £67.49 for 2 yrs) and has a free 60 day trial. It was what I used for the past 5 years. Whenever I had cause to ask support a question it was answered in around 30 minutes, and they always provided clear step-by-step instructions. You can store all your precious photos on their backup server so no need to worry about fire damage or theft. Those features really make the product so appealing.

Additionally it uses little system resources and no memory other tan when updating (and then very little) so you hardly feel it existing on your computer unlike some AV packages I have tried in the past.

Sadly it became a little too expensive for me, hence my switch to Avast.

Final word of warning: You cannot have more than one anti-virus, or firewall product, working at the same time. It causes conflicts and you get "false-positives" (i.e. wrong warnings) therefore you should always uninstall the software you no longer need. (or disable it, like Windows Firewall if you have Bullguard firewall active)

Hope this information helps you and anyone else. I do not work for Bullguard just love this relatively unknown gem of a company - can't fault them except on price, but I guess you get what you pay for!

Thanks loads - am off out now but will do it all later :-D

my advice is always the same.
why use half a dozen free progs that are all using up your RAM and running as separate processes?
just BUY (just pay for) a decent software package that covers everything...then forget about it.

you can't go far wrong with Eset Smart Security, Kaspersky or even (come on haters...) Norton 360 V3.0
New norton is actually really easy to use and only needs 10mb RAM for its system tray.
I spent years hating it, this time, it surprised me

    I install:

    Avast!
    Avira Anti-virus
    and Adaware.

NEVER (touch wood) had a problem on a windows machine with these installed.

Oh and the ones i mention are all free

I'll give you links if you want?

Eset Smart Security, Kaspersky and Norton 360v 3 ALL cover antivirus, firewall, spyware/malware, botnet protection plus a multitude of other things.

like I said, several free progs all running at once can be fine but it can also cause conflicts and system crashes.

I've always used one internet security software that does everything.
Paid for it, knowing that the money is going to help research protection and support for new viruses etc.

in free software, they only offer a limited protection and support, hence the no cost.
and since there is no cost, there is only differred funding from their pro versions going into the research.

I know it sounds like a sell out in this digital age but if you want good service from anything, its worth paying for it.
Risk your computer for the sake of 5-6 free progs, or decrease the risk and run just one.

in the end, its your choice.
if you're a novice user, having 5-6 bits of software running all the time just monitoring your system could be a potential nightmare trying to configure them all to work alongside each other.
one internet security software covering everything will generally have a wizard mode to get you set up and then basic and advanced modes too.

i'm not blowing smoke at you here, I spent 4 years repairing PCs and laptops in my last job and 99% of the repairs were down to viruses from people either having none, using the minimum amount of protection and then going bonkers all over the P2P sites like limewire, bearshare etc, getting crap sent to them via email and MSN.
the other 1% was split between broken screens and knacked power connections.

the features of an Internet security program is that it takes the place of multiple bit of software
the advantage of that is less time setting up and configuring to get them all to work in conjunction with each other.
the benefit to you is that once installed, they just get on with it. you don't have to work about it anymore.
most paid for ones will offer support via telephone or live webchat too.
