Avast is the best free one.

    Microsoft security essentials

    ^^^^^THIS^^^^^^

The free version of AVG is fantastic and before I started using AVG I used Norton user for several years.

As above, Security essentials is pretty good or if you bank with Barclays log into on-line banking and get Kaspersky Internet Security for free.

Here we go again lol, one thing I will say, you dont get owt for nowt, and secondly if you are not prepared to pay, MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials is the better of the freebies.

Avast or MSE - Don't install AVG, it's poor.

    AVAST

Avoid AVG like the plague, Causes more problems than a virus itself..!!

I use avast myself but Microsoft security essentials is also good.

The here we go again comment was not at you, its only cos these threads usually end up in a big anti virus brand bashing. Almost as bad as the mac vs pc debate.

go read some reviews on AV-Comparatives.org, dennislabs and some of the PC mags.
of course you'll get the people on here who will disagree with the reviews and say they're biased and the mags are bribed by the likes of Symantec to make Norton win.

I tried Kaspersky, it was fine till it stopped auto-updating and my system started to slow down.
in the past had used AVG free (awful, just so bad at letting stuff thru and not being able to remove it), Bitdefender, PC Cillin (now trend micro and much much better), NOD32/Eset Smart Security (awesome) and after years of slagging off Norton, tried it and its great. the new 360 V.50 is very very light and just sits there and gets on with it.
but according to the opinions of people on here, its the devil. Some probs havent tried it since the 2009 rebuild, some have and tried it on old machines and found it slows them down (found that on an old XP laptop running 256mb ram-everything slows it down!)
Some will just have heard that Norton is evil from friends and will stay closed minded.

from what I've seen tho, the new Trend Micro security is great if you want a full suite, not just a basic anti-virus.
MSE is fine for free, but only if you don't mind Microsoft spying on you and what you use your computer for. its part of the prog, its called Spynet...no seriously!!
