go to Amazon and you can prob get the complete Mcafee 2006, for around £15.
You only get the cd but thats all you need, you just throw the cd in and its basically a simple install.

Dont get Mcafee it aint worth the money.

I have Norton Internet Security 2006 (which has all the norton products) which i dont need. If u want it ill sell it to you for £15. Pm me for details if your interested

Norton (no offence manzi) is rubbish, i had Norton antivirus for a year and it didnt pick up half the viruses, trojans etc that Mcafee did.

Mcafee is your best bet

Thats both our views on this can anyone else add their experiences with both these products.

This is just open season now for folks personal opinions.
I'd not pay for either above, and get avg, adaware, spybot and the zonealarm firewall, save your £15 or so.
Like i say, everyone has their own opinion on this, but the above has been fine for me, although zonealarm was recently obtained
I bet all mac user's laff at us pc user's lol

Don't want to start flame war, but I'd rather get AVG Free 7.5 and AVG Anti-Spyware free 7.5. Both are very good and free. Try it and if it won't work for you then spend your hard-earned.

AVG free is poor... but its free.

Nortons Ok, Mcafee is slightly worse just because of the program rather than detections. Zonealarm has its firewall issues at times.

Trend Micro has great definitions, but not got much experience with the program.

    Same goes for Panda Antivirus.

Bottom line is, no antivirus will protect u against everything, i can run Norton, Fprot, Mcafee, Trend Micro, Panda and kaspersky on a badly infected computer, and every single one will find something the others didnt. But from experience, Mcafee is what picks up the least (this is based on doing 15+ virus / adware infected computers a week

Unfortunatly there is no complete solution.

The answer is, if your happy with what youve got, stick with it that developer.

Well.. as I said previously, we conducted some test, using this file (WARNING! The file is including three viruses/trojans! DO NOT run it unless you know what you are doing!).
    And results were as follows:
    Kaspesrky, NOD32, AVG - 3 viruses found
    Antivir - 2 viruses found
F-Prot, McAfee VirusScan, Trend Micro Sysclean, Symantec/Norton - Nothing found

Avast need an upgrade released 26.10.2006 to detect these trojans.

Of course, this test isn't comprehensive.

Kommunist seems to know what he's talking about so my advice is to follow his recommendation.

pretty good advice there and iv acually learned a couple of things too

Do we have a link to this free AVG download guys ??

is AVG always on protecting the comp or is it just a virus finder program?
do i have to disable my mcafee to run AVG properly ?

Thanks guys I am not an antivirus guru - just to make it clear. It was a test we conducted because one member of our forum caught nasty virus and tried to get rid of it. His antivirus was Norton Corporate (not anymore) and we decided to test other A/V packages to see which one can catch that virus/trojan.
It is possible that for other types of viruses situation will be different - winner would lose and loser would win

is AVG always on protecting the comp or is it just a virus finder program?

It got realtime protection, scanner and email protection (doesn't work for HTTP protocol, POP3/SMTP only).

do i have to disable my mcafee to run AVG properly ?

It is always a good idea to disable one antivirus when running another. Otherwise you might get a fight between two

ok i ran this AVG and nothing came up so i think ill just stick with my Mcafee as "if aint broke dont fix it" saying.

Oh, come on, bottom of page one and no ones used the term "Bloatware" yet!
I feel let down and dissappointed.

I've also got antivirus software dilemna. My yearly subscription to McAfee for Virus protection today came to an end, I'm using Zone Alarm for firewall protection and have just decided to download AVG after reading the comments listed. Once I've downloaded AVG Antivirus do I need to download anti spyware as well? If so any links for that please? Also once I've installed AVG do I completely delete Mcafee? Thanks. Foxy.

Both AVG Free and AVG Anti-Spyware Free are here.
As to McAfee, it might be a good idea to disable realtime protection first rather than do complete uninstall.

How do I disable realtime protection please? And what problems might there be if I did a complete uninstall?

I am not familiar with McAffee antivirus, so can't tell you. There should be some option like 'disable realtime protection' in its menu. As to uninstall, there shouldn't be any problem, you'll need to reinstall McAffee if you'd decide you don't like AVG.

    guys!

what can i say? i wasnt expectring such a large response so thank you all very much.

i've kinda looked into the whole a.virus argument and it goes round in circles so i had sort of made up my mind particularly since i was going to start some serious ftp, bit torrent downloading. i thought it would be better to go with a well known name.

although i'd be tempted to use AVG and test it. if it did go wrong i'd be pretty lost and then stuck!

since i've sort of made up my mind with norton or macafee, any ideas on where to get it cheapest 2007 version?

    thanks

this is all you need, you just get sent the disk and you can simply install it.

i recommend NOD32 bin using it for years and has picked up pretty much everything. i also recommend Zone alarm pro for a firewall as the spyware and firewall software is exelent. but if you have zone alarm you wont need a good anti virus as i have never had anyproblems with it. but best to be safe than sorry.
