    Any 1 use a Slow Cooker ?

    Hi , Im Thinking about getting 1 of these , but how long can i leave the food in ? say if i made a hotpot , would it be ok left on for 12/13 hours without all the stock evaporating totally ?

    Also are they actually any good or is it something thats likely to become a white elephant .

    Any particualr makes/models that might give a better result than others ?

    I use one, but for tougher cheaper cuts of meat. I think 12/13 hrs would kill a hotpot! I've made soup, chilli and curry in mine and these have turned out great but left on for 8 hrs max. If you could find one with a timer that would be better.

    cook the meat - throw it in with a load of veg and some gravy ( made with cold water ) shove it on medium at half 8 in morning - come 5/6 o'clock hey presto - one fab meal....

    I use one for stews and sometimes 3-4 days at a time adding more stock/meat/veg, the stock on the 2/3rd day is excellent as the meat as broke down into it.

    Mine is a very old Tower one. Works really well over 6-8hrs. Did a curry over weekend cenral bit had caught and was crispy but not burnt and edible.

    nice just to brown the meat off first....

    you can put joints in raw - but with a casserole - chicken/beef i cut it up and seal it for a few mins in the frying pan...

    Sear the meat in a frying pan for a couple of mins & then add into the slow cooker, that's what I usually do

    ahhh right , i was thinking of just slinging everything in in a morning , wouldnt want to sear at 5am ha.

    Might try 1 then , as some 1 suggested with a timer

    you have to brown the meat first, put the veg in the pot first tho as this takes longer to cook, then meat on top, cover the meat almost completley with stock. cook on med or high, for around 5 to 8 hours.
    personally im not keen on them as no matter what ingredients i put it in it tastes the same lol...and the meat is too tender. i prefer it oven roasted anyday. saying that it makes a lovely rice pudding and steam pudd which i use it for!

    I dont sear the meat first I just wack it all in at the same time, Meat is juicey and falls apart in your mouth Yum!

    mines too! I use it most weeks and a godsend for coming home to a lovely cooked ready to plate up meal

    just get a cheap one and then use one of those socket timers so itll go on and off when you want so if you forget to turn it on in the morning or get delayed at work it wont matter!!

    Mine's a godsend, I don't sear either. Just chuck it all in at 8.30 ish and it's all ready by 6.30. I cook curries, chilli's, casseroles, meat base for cottage pie, stews, soups etc.

    I love mine especially cooking a whole chicken in it. So tender and don't have to do anything except a splash of water on bottom & add chicken.

    Great to come home to the aromas & dinner all set.

    Go for one & enjoy the ease of it. Read up on the forums to see if it's your kind of thing, but odds in favour of you growing to wonder what you did without one.

    I got one from Argos before xmas, have cooked a nice stew in it and recently turkey legs. The meat just drops off the bone.

    They are fab, I have converted a few people to the wonders of slow cooking!

    People say that you should sear the meat, which I do usually but there is one chinese chicken curry recipe I make where you just have to toss raw chicken in cornflour and chuck it in the pot and it comes out lovely.

    I can't leave it on all day if I have got college but if I have a day off I will chuck dinner on at 10/11am while the kids are at school and then I can forget about it till dinner time :-D

    If I had to buy another one I would definitely buy one with a timer for more money - I keep meaning to by a socket timer but I have also put off buying one because the plug socket is behind my microwave and I will have to pull it out more than I'd like to make space for the timer unit.

    Flour meat, Sear it whack it in.
    Adds an extra depth of flavour from the caramelisation and the flour aids in thickening. usually chuck some pearl barley into stews and whatnot as well... i like thick :P

    I sear if it is for dinner party meal but otherwise just chuck it all in in the morning. Bags of frozen nice veg...even quicker. Can recommend the Iceland casseole mix for about £1

    Used to work with someone who would put evening meal in the slow cooker before leaving for work in the morning. He said it worked well

    I put everything together the night before in a tub in the fridge and then just put it in the slow cooker in the morning, saves even more faffing in the mornings. [SIZE="1"][COLOR="Silver"]Until 1 in the afternoon when you go ' oh pants I forgot to....' :oops:[/COLOR][/SIZE]
