Groups

    Any Access gurus on here?

    Been a long time since I have used Access (10 years or so) but I have been asked to create a database to track some information.

    I work at a college, we have about 80 students spread over 8 groups. They complete qualifications each year, these qualifications are made up of different units (with unique ref numbers). The students can do the same 'qualification' but it must be made up of different units in subsequent years

    Often our students will stay in our department for up to 5 years (sometimes changing groups, sometimes not), we need a way of recording who has done what unit, what year they did it and which group they were in when they did it

    I tried to do it in Excel but got really confusing. The students do roughly 14 units per year.

    When planning for the following year we need to be able to pull up say all of the students who have done a particular unit, and which group they are in.

    Any of that make sense?

    1 student will do many units, 1 unit could be done by many students.

    Am a bit lost if anyone could offer any ideas?

    You can use Access, but much easier in Excel, using Filters... PM me the names (made up if you want) and Qualifications with Units and I'll see what I can do this morning.

    If you can, stick them all into a XL sheet, so I'm not having to cut and paste bud!

    When I tried to use Excel the sheet became massively wide. Plus the units were never necessarily put in the same column, so when I used filters it would pick up the units that happened to be in that column, but not if i'd put it elsewhere - if that makes sense

    Would love to, unfortunately I have to do a certain amount of days working on projects to fulfill my contract - This has been given to me. The worst thing is that no-one apart from me will understand it or be able to use it. Guess who will be the person inputting all of this info...

    I'm trying to bring the campaign to end the spreadsheet/db madness infecting the world. I could the world billions by getting people to stop creating/amending/updating them!

    Use excel, but don't put everything on the same sheet have a different sheet for each unit and a summary

    I did it a long time ago and didn't save it as I got confused and frustrated. The thing I sent you was just a quick example of the sort of thing needed.
