Any advice on kids and homework?

Instead of shouting, i have calmly decided to ask HUKDers for help with handling kids and their homework.

My 7 yr old and 4 yr old are both running around upstairs and won't do their homework.

They both get £2 pockert money a week, £1 of it depends upon doing their homeowrk with a positive attitude!!!!! I have gentley reminded them of this deal.

Have you got any advice or is it time to SHOUT!

Rep will be given for anyone who suceeds. lol

yeah, reading and some word work - which i agree with

the 4 year old has pocket money because the 7 yr old does.( treat them fairly) I have only just started pm cos all his mates get pm.

Maybe the whole £2 should depend on satisfactory homework as part of the deal.

might have to resort to saying this, but trying not to, it makes me cringe, something our parents would say to us.

Personaly I think at that age if the teachers cant teach them what they need to know in the amount of hours they are in school then something is wrong!

the other £1 is dependant on general good behaviour

Let them run around, have tea, calm themselves and warn them that after tea, say bout 6pm(or whateva) it's gonna be homework time. Don't shout, speaking from experience, they couldn't care less.

they haven't had tea yet, trying to starve them into working

Bring Back the Cane! I mean. (JOKE)

I'm a kid, well im at college anyway. Get them filled with food, split them up if you have 2. Calm them down. And then bribery! Bribery always works!

    It works.

Other than that threaten to tell their teachers on them, lol, play them at their own game, that works with my two, tell them they CAN'T do their homework, and wait until Miss finds out, what will she say? lol

yeah, this seems the best way forward. they have agreed to do hoemwork after tea. lets see if it works....

Maybe the £2 pm should be given when the whole criteria (behaviour/homework etc etc) has been met by the end of the week. If they know they are still getting some pm because of general good behaviour, it may not not be an incentive to do homework vice versa, but if they know they will not get any pm if they fail on any target them the incentive is there.

im doing homework with my 5 year old...she is happy to do it....before you all hang me i have a 13 year old who grunts at me like i just walked off the moon...thats just when i say "hi hun how was your day".......obviously as i know nothing at all there is no point in me offering to help him with his.....why do 13 year old boys act like hormonal women??

    blackpeppa;3721252

go to the fusebox and take out all of the fuses bar the one that runs the computer ;-)

We have a no tv /computer rule until all homework is done...
They both know that rule and we have no rowing at all these days..

actually the "right thats it your not allowed to do homework tonight ,its nearly bedtime"will work....they always want the opposite

Tried that with my ten yr old the other week. Backfired a bit for me, teacher didn't give a toss. He ended up with a computer ban from me but if the school doesn't care then why should he?! DOH!

lollll tell them that you want them to do there homework and if they dont the next time they want to watch a cartoon or play on computer... u will say no.
Try that, and stick by it, i am sure the next time you remind them of the consequences they will remember!

first time is horrid cos they kick off but dig a heels in!

Do they have to do it tonight? Is it somehow vital?
If not, then just say that they have broken their agreement and won't be getting their £1 pocket money allocated to homework and they won't be able to do some other thing that they love e.g. dance club, until the homework is done. Leave them to make the decision. If they still refuse, say that you will have to go into school and tell their teachers but you are no longer prepared to discuss the situation. If the hwk isn't done by whatever deadline, go into school, explain the situation and hope that it doesn't get that far.

I think doing it straight after school is no fun as they are tired and need a break.
I'd try sitting at a table after tea with one on each side of you and no telly on. This gives them immediate feed back on what the are doing and you can encourage both their efforts.
I know it sounds a chore but I really quite enjoyed it because that was a good time to hear all the school news from them. I have a 17 year old and a 13 year old and after years of battles I found that it worked best to be part of it.
    Good luck:-D
