I work in a bookies as a deputy. So I've got to come up with a 3 month and 6 month plan on what i'm going to do. promotion ideas. How to get more market share etc....

What firm you work for? Best things to do is regular fobt tournaments and do them in fancy dress, like if you do a deal or no deal tournament get dressed up as Noel and take pictures as evidence shows that your good crack and regular tournaments do boost turnover. Good way to boost slippage is to do lucky dips on the Irish, Spanish, new York lotto and also do scorecast lucky dips on local football games just explain small stakes big money, easy to sell. Basically in a bookies people attract people offer every Tom sick and Harry tea and coffee and get a big bowl of sweets for the punters on the counter, there's nothing more off putting for a punter a empty betting shop. Just sales through service, what I have noticed working in a betting shop even the 20p punter is just important as the £100 punter they help to create an atmosphere which what the bookies is all about nowadays with be able to get a bet on within a click off a button these day.

So you work for Betfred then. We have tournaments once a month anyway so not really an original idea but perhaps with the little extra cash i get a costume for me or a team member might be achievable. Lucky dips are already available in all shops. Scorecast lucky dips might be a good idea but one of the things there making us push is the both teams to score coupons. Funnily enough the competition for this shop are 2 betfred shops. Perhaps you've got an idea how i can take some business off fred? i mean that guy want you to work Christmas day and do lates on a Sunday and he pays peanuts so i'm told

I work for corals with a betfred and a hills either side and at the moment I know for a fact betfred offer the worst odds on goals goals goals! Thing about being a manager you can sort of make your own rules up with the area managers consent like we had a promotion if you spend £10 or more you get a free £1 bet on the new yes/no coupon, that was successful so we done the same for a goalfest coupon five fold or more. It's all about making the punters aware of new coupons, even the goals goals goals are still newish just explain to your football punters how they work and how good they are you'll be surprised how many people don't understand them and that's new business for you.

Hills by any chance?
I thought most hills promo's were national / regional and the managers didn't have much input into them.

Free tea/coffee if you don't already do it.
Triple odds lucky 15

Really depends on your competition, but as far as I'm aware, if it is Hills, your hands are pretty tied anyway.
Will your manager not help you?

yeah that sounds do-able bet £10 on one bet and get a free £1 both teams to score 1 per customer
Are you the shop manager btw? Do you do that weekly or on a certain day?

Yeah big willy hills.. You can do Promotion with the consent of your AOM

A machine tournement...

Not an expert in this area but saying you will get consent from your AOM sounds as important as having the ideas in the first place. Also it makes sense to pilot an idea to assess how profitable it is. That way things that don't work wont be costly.

so what sort of budget, how far can you go? Free roulette tournaments would get punters in but can you use the FOTB for the promos?

Increase profitability - take out anything to do with racing and just install wall to wall FOTB's.
Move into the 21st century and install a betfair room with an SIS feed and charge per hour/day.
Persude HO to put sky sports back in for football.
Persude all your punters to split their bets so you get more slips through the tills

Shop manager was deputy for 4years then manager left for health reasons I was stand in and then just had an interview and got the promotion. We do shop only promotions and tournaments regulary on a Saturday where we take 1700 slips plus a good 700 bingos its a mega busy shop! Being manager it's never been better being in control of rotas and have a great shop team so having the work/life balance is great, which can be hard in certain shops which I hear people moan about all the time which is fully understandable.

Im a DM for another bookies not mentioned yet, the competition is the big one.
If theres competition you always get allowed to do a lot more.
Triple odds lucky 15s, Irish/49s discount.
Bit ridiculous sometimes, cos if you have a shop close to the competitors, ive seen them get the promos and you not, so the shop from the same company steals your punters and the manager gets it in the neck lol.

Get your machine tournaments, and check opening/closing times (if you want to open that can of worms, and do 8am to 10pm :s )
Obviously free tea/coffee

Still wouldnt do the managers job, i know the way the industrys going lol

I don't know why but William hill don't do the bingo like corals do. Be great for the older generation. The shop i'm applying for is only small. 20 customers and its full basically..I think it's fair to say you've given me some idea's. i think i can start butting some idea's on paper now and build a plan up..

Not an idea for your shop but more of a query.

could a betting shop owner get a drinks license? Then you could have a bar and a big screen to watch footy, take in-play bets etc.

Hell no that's casino territory and that would need doormen for obvious reasons

Tell them your ruthless, explain how you recently picked your 2 hamsters up and held them in your mighty hands and laughed in their puzzled faces for 45 minutes straight as you explained how death was nearing and that the kids also hated them and that they were soon to be replaced by new toys...
You will leave them thinking ... Theres a man who dont give a flying F about morals... He is all about the money

Glad i could help

In all seriousness

FOTB tournaments - do them on games people actually play. The one at the weekend I had a go, playing £2 a spin, and for 3 of a kind you won 10p. 10p winnings from a £2 bet, WTF. How to put people off playing them. Do them on roulette, reel king, rainbow riches, the popular ones.
Increased odds for Irish lottery
Price match local competition for football prices, inc first goalscorers, correct scores etc.
Do BOG races
Do 3 x odds one winner L15's
Do stuff like put £10 on the football tonight, get £5 free machine play.

Match your own internet prices, which are massively different at times. I went to put a scorecast on at the weekend, 245-1 on WH website, 155-1 instore. I don't mind a few points difference, but 90? Seriously and they wonder why people start betting online instead.

Go and read the compliance manual and go through the gambling act, come up with some clever and witty answers referring to them in the interview. Most importantly read into your firms think 21 policy, even though the bookies should take more action on adults ruining there life's on roulette then some spotty teenager wanting a 50p coupon on. At the end off the day the manager gets all the **** and has to sort all the shops major problems, it's not a job for the faint hearted the amount of abuse, fraudsters, drunks, smack heads and people kicking the **** out of the fobt's I get to deal with on a daily basis is unreal! but overall
it's a great job.
