    Any budget laptop recommendations?

    Hi all,

Am looking for a budget laptop, nearer £200 if possible, but £300 at a push. It's going to mostly be used for office stuff (word, ppt and excel). It might have some fairly large spreadsheets thrown at it, but no photo / video editing or major gaming.

Ideally it would be fairly small and light as it'll need to be stored out of the way when not in use.

I'm happy with refurbs and an older model that still holds it's own...
I'd consider Chromebooks (have looked at these before, my main concern would be using Sheets / Excel 365 for formula heavy / pivot table analysis)
I'd consider Chinese laptops (I think?), although feel free to pursuade me otherwise!

I've been looking at the Cloudbook 14. It has some good reviews and is well inside the budget, but would I struggle with 2GB of memory?

    Thanks in advance

I have a Linx 1010 (the exclusive one to Argos which has a bit more ram). I find it excellent for documents, I also use it for Photoshop with very few hiccups and that is demanding.

will never go back to a standard laptop again.

Thanks Robot, I'd slightly discounted tablet / laptop combos as I've an Asus android tablet with keyboard dock and its a fair bit buggy and very slow.

Of course this might have mroe to do with android than the transformer form factor...

I bought 2 of these for myself and daughter, delighted with them. Stated refurbished but the 2 I got were brand new. You can update to windows 10 for free using links on HUKD. Touchscreen is great. I heard that they accept 9% on the 'make offer', did that and it was accepted. (Tried a bit higher than 9% and offer was declined). ebay.co.uk/itm…0a7

Linx uses windows, I have had numerous android tablets and have always ended up selling them as I had no idea what to do with them.

I also have had numerous laptops prior gambling with the linx, like you I only used them for work documents and internet browsing and they always ended up slowing down after a while, with my last laptop I ended up spending £200 and out of the box it struggled with simple internet browsing.

I think the main reason is possibly the hardrive maybe? if you do go for a laptop I would say look for an SSD one.

Also I would avoid Chromebooks, girlfriend had one for college and it was awful, because it was google they wanted you to always be online to just save documents.

    Thanks Robot.

Thanks Ellen, any specific models from there you'd recommend?

    Hopefully not too late!

For your price range and use case, I would personally recommend a refurbished corporate laptop. For less than £200, something along the lines of:

    - Lenovo Thinkpad T410/T420/X210/X220
    - HP Elitebook 8470p/8570p
    - Dell Latitude (various models)

You'll most likely land a first or second generation i5, 4GB of ram and a 500GB HDD. If you're lucky, you might be able to find a laptop with a 128GB SSD, but it's simple to upgrade this yourself.

Corporate laptops also tend to have slightly better quality screens. Cheap consumer laptops use 1366x768 TN panels in this price range - low resolution, poor viewing angles and average colour reproduction. In this price range, you'll likely get a 1440x900 IPS panel - better colour reproduction, truer blacks, better viewing angles and a higher resolution.

    Good luck!
