if it's just the task bar and start menu gone then try pressing CTRL + ESC does it come up?

Completely blank? If so go into task manager/File/New task and type explorer. See what that does.

it does work  , but that means i have to type 'explorer' everytime i log on AND THE System Restore still doesn't work.

Well now you've got somewhere try running msconfig and seeing if there are changes there. You could try putting a link into startmenu/programs/startup for explorer.exe, not sure if it would work or not but it may be a quick and dirty fix. Seems like something's messed up the registry though. I'd reinstall windows tbh. Less hassle than trying to find the problem

Possible fix. Open regedit and go here :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Create a new string value and call it explorer. Click on the newly created item and change the value to : C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Then exit and reboot. Got as much chance of working as anything else

    Try the above good advice

If no joy, before trying a reinstall try this program kellys-korner-xp.com/tas…htm it may do the trick

Sounds like a virus. Will it boot into safe mode?

can boot into safe mode but cannot do system restore in it.

When you boot into safe mode, do you still have to start the explorer process manually?
Sounds like a corrupt profile to me. You could try creating a new profile in Control Panel - User Accounts and then click create user account.
If explorer.exe loads in the newly created account, it confirms the old profile is corrupt.

Friend of mine had a similiar problem to this and it was viral. What do you use for AV, and is it up to date?

Mcafee and its up to date i think, had a full scan and found nothing. Is this problem actually caused by virus?

Did you try the Taskbar Repair Tool mentioned above? You could try restoring your registry: save this REG File to your hard disk kellys-korner-xp.com/reg…reg
Double click on the nodesktop.reg file you have downloaded and answer yes to the import prompt to add this file to your registry
Restart windows and see if this has solved your problem
If that fails there may be one way you can get to your user account without using the control panel, but only if you are using XP Pro, you may be able to access the user accounts by using the Local Users and Groups mmc snap in
    Click Start / Run
    Type in lusrmgr.msc
Right click on Users and then choose create new account
If above works restore your old profile follow hotukdeals.com/ite…747 3rd post down.
Also you could try this support.microsoft.com/def…027
    Good luck
As Shengis said earlier it may be quicker to reinstall windows, easier than trying to find the problem sometimes, assuming you can back up all your data.
