    ANY CYCLISTS HERE ?

Son 14 has been going out on a few bikes rides lately on his own. All the years I have been trying to get him to wear a helmet and he won't.

He has now asked me for a helmet because he wants to start going on some roads and seems keen to do more cycling. Where do I begin and what to look for without if costing a fortune???

I really want to encourage him. Now need to buy a helmet, he has grown out of the smaller one (unused!). I am also worried. I know there are cycling proficiency classess in the primary schools but not heard of any at senior schools. I am sure he won't be keen but I wan t to try my best to make sure he is safe on the roads.

I was 16st, now 13st but still feel too big to get on a bike. Would love to join him one day.

Grateful for any advice from regular cycle users please

Thats a shame about the helmet, when i was in Aus last year it is law to wear one, if you are caught without you get an auto $120 fine!!!, Halfords are good for cheaper helmets, the test is a scheme called "Bikeability" now, check and see if they have a scheme near you by looking that their site,

    bikeability.org.uk/

I also ride a bike a lot, around London, but i dont wear helmet. I know i should, but they bug me. Im looking for one so im safer.

I never been to any classes, i doubt anyone needs them. They probably teach you how to indicate etc.

I was really into going on bike rides on my own when I was 14-16 in fact I ended up cycling 10 miles each way to work and back for 2 yrs without a helmet when I was 18, got knocked off twice. No head injuries though thankfully. Once cycled 50 miles to outskirts of London and back to my village went along dual carriageways etc when I was 15 was fine. I wouldn't dare of doing it now without a helmet, at that age you just think you're going to live forever. Me and my mates all 25-26 wear helmets as we do mountain biking but still wear one when we're on the roads.

If you get him magazines of cool guys wearing one on the roads, mountains he'll be more inclined to wear one. I would also spend more on a helmet than you think you should, if it looks good he'll wear it so don't skimp. My girlfriend bought me one but I didn't like it and was honest about it, we went and chose a helmet I really did like and I wear it all the time now.

    I've got this one

Though any £35+ Giro and Bell helmets are good

yeer i would let him choose a new one thats the right fit and also i definatley recomended allways wearing a helmet as theres so many morans on the roads now and i've come of a few times so i would recomend that

I was 16st, now 13st but still feel too big to get on a bike.

I was 17.5 st when I started cycling. I am now 15st 2. I lost that weight cause of cycling and built up alot of stamina and muscle whilst doing it. Never feel to big to do something. In the immortal words of Nike, "Just Do It".

make sure the helmet is to british standards - kitemark, and fits properly - snug with no wobble, gotta have good ventilation, cuz can get too hot to wear.

Get yourself a bike and go with him,it's not too bad exercise if you want to lose weight.

Am planning to get on a bike at some stage. Not sure he will want to be seen with me though, ruin his street cred.

I would be happier if he had some safety lessons first though

I bought a very cheap bike from Toys R Us a few years back,it was about £50,it's all rusty now but I'm hoping to buy another eventually and store it properly!

Yeh teenagers and street cred,I used to go all over on my Shopper,it was a red glitter Halfords one and it folded in half, parents didn't even buy me it new :x come from a neighbour when I was about 10.

Bad bad idea he will hate you forever! and I don't know of any lessons for older kids just give him a copy of the high way code

I thought all kids to a cycling proficiency test at primary school that's enough to get him on the right tracks.

There were no cycling proficiency tests at his primary school. There are now. That's my point, he has not had anything and that's what worries me.

Sure he will hate me....I can live with it

I guess then you need to show him how to ride responsibly and when to indicate at cross roads, left turns etc

He'll probably say he knows how to do all that, just say you need to check for your own peace of mind, but it means you need to wear a helmet too

Ha. Not many 14 yr old would listen to parents instructions! :w00t:

Nope, if it happens, has to be someone else.

I have not been on a bike yet.....and I would always wear a helmet.

14yr olds do not mimic parents behaviour, that stops about age10

Went to Halfords last night. Waste of time. Could not try any helmets on, they were all attached to boxes. Totally uninterested in helping me select one.

Anyone else suggest other retailers who sell helmets please?

We've got a local bike shop thats been in our town forever. Very helpful. Maybe you've got one too but don't know about it? Google

Have you a Go Outdoors near you? I got my helmet from there, and the lad in the Stockton store was really helpful - showed me how to put it on correctly and sized me up, etc. Was a good buy, too.....
