Any good DVD conversion programs to use?

A bit of an unusual question. I'm hoping to move the family back to the USA next year.

Due to the cost of transport, and the region coding of the DVD's I would like to convert them to MP4 files or MKV/similar so I can still watch them in the States without the cost of a specialist player. I've been buying them since 2001 so I've got a fair few. I can't say I want to convert them all, but some I really want to keep.

Is there any good software I could use to convert my collection to digital? Also is this legal to do? Do I need to keep the DVD's or can I dispose of them once converted?

handbrake is decent enough to compress and convert video types, tho you will still need a "dvdripper" can be googled easy enough to get the raw files from the dvds with copyright protection* (the convertxtodvd was the other way around of doing video files to dvd)

the legalness of backing up your own dvds is questionable (depending on where you are and where you travel to, a full list would take to long) but most peoples opinion on the matter is if you own something that why should it get ruined by damage of time and you have to replace it again and again at retail, so doing so is fine in most peoples books, same as streaming movies and tv online i a gray area, tho more than likely you wouldnt get in trouble of it as its only normally the bootleg sealers or movie / tv uploaders that do and not the personal back up or streamers that do

MakeMKV and Handbrake are the two apps you should be looking at. As far as I know it's not legal to do what you're planning, especially if you're going to get rid of the DVDs afterwards, but my guess is you won't be prosecuted

Dvdfab is what I used to rip my entire collection. I don't think it's cheap but I managed to pretty much rip everything during the trial period, which I think is only a couple of weeks. I used an old laptop for the process on the basis I could wipe it and re-install Dvdfab to extend the trial time if needed.

I didn't bother with any conversions I ripped a 1:1 ISO of them all as external drives are so cheap now. Converting to MP4 \ MKV or any other format is time consuming and will never be as good quality.

Honestly, why even bother? I'm sure you've spent a lot of money on the DVD collection but do you really now want to spend a lot of time to convert them? Just sell them off, take the loss, use the money you make to buy Blu-Rays/digitial versions of the DVDs you find you really miss. I've been through the same situation and at the time it felt important but afterwards I asked myself why the f*ck I did all that work to have low quality backups of movies I hardly ever watch.

Most dvd players have a secret menu to make it multi region

Yep it's a great free program.

My opinion, Dont bother. Keep you top favorites. Most DVD players have a Region unlock code you can find on internet.

OP is also concerned about the cost of transport though.

Ya, just moving the basics over to England cost about $2,500 and that was 15 or so years ago. Anything I can do to lighten the load would be great. I probably will keep the bare minimum, like some of the British sitcoms that may not be found in the States.

Moving is not fun.
