i have to order one today, just saw this and thought it will do, but now unsure

its not a problem for me, in fact in prefer glossy screen, the matte one makes the screen look dull

Personally I'd say it would be a godd time to buy, as it's coming up to the end of company's VAT quarter, so they'll be pushing out the better deals at the moment.

is the warranty with dell or the shop?

I wouldn't go for the Dell because it's least likely to offer a free Win7 upgrade. Do the other two - the HP & Acer - come with this?

However, one cannot argue with the 3-yearon-site Dell warranty, which will be handled by Dell by the looks of it. The laptop is likely to cost £350+ (incl VAT + del), & you could easily get Win7 (pre-order offer) for another £50 anyway (i.e. if you hate Vista so much!).

the acer one doesnt come with the free upgrade, well doesnt show on hp site so ide say no, dont know about the acer one, it doesnt say it does. Never to sure on these extra warranty things, dont they just say its a software issue, not our problem

Well, I think we'll need to have a look at the individual manufacturers' websites to see which of their laptops qualify for a free Win7 upgrade - from ]Microsoft:

    * For further information about the Windows 7 Upgrade Option, please see … * For further information about the Windows 7 Upgrade Option, please see the FAQ. Here are the essential details: Delivery of Windows 7 product will vary by offer and location, but the earliest you could expect to receive it would be at the time of Windows 7 general availability, October 22, 2009. There are two ways in which you may be eligible to receive Windows 7 under this program. They are: (1) When you purchase a qualifying PC [laptop] with Windows Vista, as determined by each participating PC manufacturer, from a retailer or directly from the PC manufacturer or (2) when you purchase a qualifying retail packaged Windows Vista product from your favorite retailer. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option applies to Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate editions. Your Windows 7 product will be the comparable version of what you purchased for Windows Vista: so you'll get Windows 7 Home Premium E, Windows 7 Professional E, or Windows 7 Ultimate E, respectively. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option program runs from June 26, 2009 through January 31, 2010. However, individual PC manufacturers may choose to offer the option for a shorter period on their PCs. Offer details, prices, and delivery methods will vary. For details for new PC purchases, please check the manufacturer's website. For purchases of retail packaged software, please go to the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Option fulfillment site for retail packaged software.

I suppose that's because they reckon most software issues are generally caused by the endusers (unless the latter can prove otherwise!). And most software issues are easily solved by a reinstall/system recovery/using alternative software, etc.

Hardware issues are harder to solve, usually require additional components for diagnosis & repair, etc - so basically more time-consuming & expense.

Anyway, in the end it comes down to whether you'd rather have a 1-year return-to-base warranty (that the others offer), or a 3-year on-site one.

Have you tried Win7 (the beta/RC) btw?

no, my old lappy was on xp, lappy on now is vista and am getting use to it a little. I know nothing about laptops at all, i have about £400 and want to try and get the best i can for my money. All i do really is surf the net, my old lappy only had 512 memory and 80gb hard drive so anything is an improvement, like i said just want the best i can get for me money really

Well, if it's only going to be used to surf the net, then you don't even need a dual-core one, or one with tons of RAM/hard drive space. But I don't know of anyone who does older gen, brand new laptops. Your best bet may be a refurb place like Mcscom, & one with XP or no OS installed (don't worry, we'll help you install an OS if it comes to it). Let's see what we can come up with for ~£250-300, & save you a bit of cash....

theres bigpockets but i think there prices seem a little steep for second hand poor specs, and medion, my old one was a medion and started falling apart bit by bit after about 15 months

    sassie;5739338

    why is it better?

better processor, but less ram but if youre not playing games etc 3gb ram is more than enough, the screen on the acer will go to 1366x768 so you will beable to watch HD on the web ie iplayer

    and its cheaper

i thought intel 2 core was better than dual core

it is but the acers is a faster clock speed

if you are using the lappy for just internet browsing, word, music, dvd's etc then it wont make a difference
