My poor cats just back from the vet and has a catheter in place. Vet has told me that he has to keep this 'buster collar' on. It this huge horrible plastic thing and he is goig NUTS with it.

Any ideas on how to calm him down I'm at my wits end!!

awww my cat went nuts when he had his head thingy on too, it was horrible he just drooped around the living room all day and couldnt get comfy. We had to just keep giving him treats and giving him his favourite toy and red blanky to curl up on x

Got b;adder stones and keeps getting blocked. Needs an op but can't have it so this is really a last ditch attempt TBH if he blocks again when they take the catheter out tomorrow we'll have to put him to sleep

Right well don't give him any rescue remedies, he's too poorly to deal with any problems so don't risk it. If you take the collar off will he settle and not touch the op site, or will he go crazy still?

will prob still lick the op site. He'd be happier. I don't think he'd pull the catheter out though. I don't know whither to risk the infection and at least he'd be happy

How old is he? Why can't he have the op? and is diet not controlling the stones?

Also its not so much a problem being infection, its him getting the catheter out then we have a open wound AND a wasted day in the solving process.

hes 12 to old and has heart probs and if I;m honest we just can't afford it. Just found out about the stones he was taken to the vet as an emergancy on sunday and all the savings we had have payed for the tratment since. His diet should start to work in 6-8 weeks but the vets not to hopeful about him lasting that long. I feel awful cos I can't make him better and even if I could I can't bloody afford it:cry:

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor puss. Do you have something soft and squishy he could snuggle into that would help ease the discomfort of the collar around his neck?

One of my cats was once very poorly and I slept on the floor next to her, so I could comfort her if she needed it. Maybe take him to bed with you?

Please don't beat yourself up about not being able to afford the op. Is there a PDSA or Blue Cross in your area? They can either provide free treatment or help towards the cost.

I will say a prayer for you both.

yes, I don't use the glass pippette that come with it, but a plasic one the vet gave me, I bred siamese, russian blues, bengals, and orientals for over 15 yrs and a couple of the top GCCF judges recommended using it to calm a nervous rescue siamese I had, but in the case of bladder stones I'm not sure, prob best to check with the vet.
Good luck, keeping fingers crossed for you

Don't beat yourself up, he probably wouldn't make the op anyway due to age and heart problems. Lets hope this cathether works wonders, and we take it from there. But in the meantime try giving him breaks from the collar whilst your there, but do not leave him unattended without the collar on. If he is so horrendous and stressed out with the collar on, then you have no choice really.

What about putting him on a bed or bean bag and letting him hang his head over the side so the collar aint touching anything, then it wont put his neck in an akward position

Thanks for last night everyone.

Leo now has collar off and is a much happier cat. Turns out he didn't need it as the little git had removed the cathiter himself in the 10 mins I was at the vets getting him a smaller collar!!!!!
