Any ideas for what to do in Whitby?

I am going to Whitby with family next wee and we are looking for things to do. We are going to the whitby abbey and on the north yorkshire moors railway to pickering to go to the pickering castle.
Does anyone know of anything else we can do? There is 10 of us going, (me and my 2 sisters, my mum n dad, my nana, my grandma and my 2 young nephews and niece).
    Any ideas welcome.
    Thank you.

It's a fantastic part of the world, I stayed in Bempton near Bridlington recently with my girlfriend (bit of a drive from Whitby though :-( ). You can go to the RSPB reserve to see the Puffins and take the coastal walk along the cliffs (if your Nana and Grandma are up to it!).

You can also go for a day out to Scarborough.

    Enjoy your Hols.

    Play some 'crazy' golf. lol

Climbing the 199 steps (up to the Abbey) will take some time...
Dracula Experience is also worth a go if slightly jumpy for the young ones.
MisterChips fish and chips on Abbey side is deffo worth lunch....better than a 2 hour wait outside The Magpie
    Good Luck

The kids might like ']Go Ape' at Dalby Forest which is pretty close to Whitby (also some brilliant cycle routes if you're into that sort of thing...) - guess it depends how old they are.

Weather is set to be fab, just heard them say next week will be real summer weather!!!

Go to the Magpie Cafe for Fish and Chips

Went there last year. Open top double decker bus tour is good (and goes up to the Abbey). Fish and chips at MisterChips AND Magpie (I thought the Magpie had the edge but get a takeaway and eat them on the pier). There's a small shop that sells freshly smoked fish (near bottom of abbey stairs) but go there before mid morning. You can also go and visit Robin Hoods bay which is nearby and Goatland where they film heartbeat.....

'am going to Whitby with family next wee'

as soon as you'd had your next week's wee, do you set off? how are the family with waiting for it?

seriously, you could maybe visit the dracula museum, not sure it'll be open though, I agree with other posters, go along the prom and have some fish and chips, tehre are also some interesting rock and crystal shops

you could try go to goatland where the tv series heartbeat is filmed also yeah about fish and chips, i found the nicest one was the one on the left after you cross the bridge in Whitby itself. chip away or something im sure it was called :), you could also go driving south to filey very nice place to visit

Nice place ,is Whitby . Go there in costume ................I mean go as Goths . You'll enjoy the place so much better :-)

So far most people have suggested fish and chips for something to do (myself included)....it must be a really exciting place to go, or really good fish and chips :P

We where there for a week last year, went to the Eden Camp - highly recommended. And of course, also the fish and chips from the magpie

I really wouldn't bother queueing for 3 hours for fish and chips in the Magpie, honestly. Pop down to Scarborough only 20 minutes south, there are loads of proper fish and chippies there. If you have little ones, Kinderland in Scarborough is OK and there is the Sea Life Centre too. There are some cute shops in Whitby just at the bottom of the 199 steps, that should take up half a day browsing. There is the beach of course, completely free entry. A couple of arcades, but a boat trip is really cheap and quite nice. If you go up to the top of the opposite cliff to the Abbey side, there are some proper whale bones that form an arch, and I believe the cafe on the way up to the top was used in Heartbeat, the hotel at the top is on TV's The Royal too I believe. The Endeavour is sometimes parked up next to the information centre near to the train station too, but pretty pricey to go on board to look round. The swinging bridge is sometimes in use and that is pretty cool to watch. Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes, birthplace of Captain Cook are really nice proper sea villages, love 'em just down the coast from Whitby. I love Whitby, we pop down there all the time. :-D
