Any ideas how to get rid of the smell of smoke in a house?

moving into a new house in a few weeks and the owners smoke a fair bit and it stinks. New carpets are going in and im going to get a cleaner in to do a top to bottom clean before we move in but does anyone have any ideas that work ref how to get rid of that lingering smoke smell?

The obvious ones are air freshners but that would just mask it i guess.

    thanks

Windows open for a week and remove anything which could hold the smell of smoke.

A lot of cleaners where employeed offering this service following the smoking ban in pubs..

air out as much as you can
all furnishings, get new if you cant wash, or wash if you can
if you have to live with the curtains, then get them dry cleaned

a good wipe down of ceilings and walls, and all nooks and crannys and dust traps

I hate the smell of old smoke, and it lingers, yuk

    Paint?

    +1 every room

When my husband burnt a lamb bone at Christmas (he was supposed to be making stock!), we placed white wine vinegar in saucers in each room. This helped to eliminate the smell
