Any ideas on what this cable could be...

Im clearing out my room at the moment and have discovered a cable thats been kicking about in various cuboards in my room for years as i never figured out what its for, i thought possibly camcorder or connecting a computer to a TV.

Its got like the antenna connection (Male) that goes into the back of the tv and at the other end it plugs into like a phono socket but judging from other end i would say its the yellow port for visual, have nothing to test it with.

First he calls it a console, now he calls it a collectable and an antique. Make him stop, make him stop! I'm not that old, I'm not!!!! :w00t::cry:

Just kidding.

Not sure which you had as from your description it could be many of the home computers from the 80s, but it could well be that that lead is from the one you have, as I think they all used a similar cable to hook up to the TV. Or it could be from one of the earlier consoles, as mentioned above.

Thats like in here we have lot of cables and scart bits and whatever about and then we forget what thinsg are for what when they out away for a long time.

Sounds like a BBC Micro computer.

I vauge memory of some game that involved moving room to room trying to collect bags of gold then for no apparent reason turning into the hulk.

Those were the days. 15mins of listening to that sweet music only to find the game didn't load. :w00t: Adjust the volume a fraction and try again. Repeat until either the game loads or you die of old age!

The cables are going for £1.50 on eBay new, so yeah, probably not worth the hassle.

was there even such thing as pirated material back then as you could high speed dub any casset onto a normal tape and it worked fine lol

Well, yeah, you could copy the tapes, but you had to get the volume levels just right which wasn't always that easy. They tried various methods of copy protection though. For example, they would ask you to enter the 4th word on line 17 of page 48 of the manual, or they would include little code charts that you had to enter the correct number from. So copying the tape was easy, copying the manual, or whatever was the hard part. The original Elite had this lens thing that you had to hold up to the tv screen in the right place and it would turn the dots displayed on the screen into a code you had to enter, but it wasn't that easy to use.

ETA:

]This site shows the Lenslock (the thing that came with Elite) in action, although their picture isn't very clear. The top half shows the code as it is displayed on the screen, and the bottom half shows what it looks like when you hold the lenslock up to it - you should be able to make out the letters 'O' and 'K' through the lenslock.

This is an example of the kind of code charts they used. As you can see, it's in colour so hard to photocopy (colour copiers were very rare back then). They made it harder later by including pages of these kinds of charts instead of just one small chart

Damn philistine! MM indeed (that was **** lol). Quazatron. The first robot wars! 'All' you had to do was battle all the other robots, scavenge parts to make yours stronger and kill everything to win. Wicked game;-) Theres even a project to port it to PC but its a bit naff tbh.

That Wiki link says it draws visual comparisons to MM !!!!

It doesn't ring a bell though. I never did get round to playing all of the thousands of games I had on all consoles! :pirate:

This is another fav of mine:

3D Death Chase - released around the same time as Return Of The Jedi, so to any Star Wars Fan you weren't really riding motor bikes, you were riding Speeder Bikes through the forests of Endor! Such simple graphics/gameplay but together they produced an amazing sense of adrenalin inducing speed that made you want to play again and again.

just to go back to the cable for a minute! I bet it was from a nintendo 64, your too young to remember the good old days of 'gaming'!!

Always did like the chase around solving problems type games. Probably why i'm a fan of FPS's.

By the way for anybody that has a modded Xbox a little present : ]FuseX0.6. Very hard to get hold of.

It was only 9 or 10 years ago I stopped playing my spectrum due to having my GCSE exams then going to college meaning my priorities changed.

Tir Na Nog, Total Eclipse and loads of other classic games, Dizzy, Rockstar Ate My Hamster Seymour Goes To Hollywood, I likes Codemasters games(whatever happened to them they seem to not release many games any more) and Rare made great games( or Ultimate Play The Game as they were called them)

Still have mine, plus a ZX81 and thermal printer, 48k white version,+2A 128K +3 etc.

What was the name of that split screen text adventure

They still release a couple games a year. Their Toca Touring Cars/Colin McRae Rally/DIRT franchises are probably their better known ones.

Nice link! Never seen this before (though never looked either!!!)

Shame they dont have any as .swf

Have downloaded CE and taking a peek! (or even a poke!)

Hmmm. Its a "new batch" not the same - but fond memories! Im using it on an ancient P2 - (which I use for general internet use only) and it runs like a pig! never imagined a speccy being more "powerful" !!!

Head Over Heels for the Speccy was one of my favourites. You can now download a free updated version for your PC from the makers. retrospec.sgn.net/gam…oh/
