any ideas re: HDD's used with TV's through USB's?

I have a tv with a usb port so presumed I could buy a HDD, put music/video on it and play through the TV surround sound system......Ive figured out how to change the input to the USB port, but when I do this the TV screen flashes between a loading page, and a stop page (as though theres nothing on the HDD, which there is)

wondered if anyone had any bright ideas as to what could be/is wrong....and how to sort it?

taa....will rep helpers soon as no rep left for today lol

Don't think it's a given that you can plays stuff through usb.
Mine has one but I can only update firmware and look at pics.

Try AVforums if you get no help here.

well there are pics on the HDD too......I put one video, a couple of cd's and some pics on to see if it would load anything up.....I think I should be able to view something through it as the loading page has icons for pics and music (a picture and music note)....I have deleted some things off it (wondered if something might not be recognised by it.....) so off to try again

didnt work lol

Firstly ,The drive will need to be formatted to FAT32, Plug it into your PC and in my computer right click on it and select
properties,
and where it says files system is it NTFS or FAT32 ?

What model is it. I don't think all tv's can play movies and pictures, but certain ones can depending on the firmware the tv is using I think

as above check the format needed for the tv prob FAT32

its a Grundig GU19WDVD3....I dont see why it would have the music and camera sign if it doesnt playback images and music
I have plugged my ipod into it and it plays music off that......I have also taken everything off the HDD and put only music on, yet it still does the same thing

it plays music as it has played it off the ipod, it wont play it off the HDD so even if it cant show images (which I think it can) or videos (which im not sure of) then it should play the music

I had a TV with a USB input, however, it would only play files from a flash drive. I think this is because HDDs require to be powered, which the TV didn't do. I suggest that you try watching a movie from a flash drive, it's worth a go.

that sounds like a decent reason...taa....although not what I was hoping for :x

just realised above I said it was ntfs (as im sure i formatted it to that) but looking now its FAT lol

Son has same TV, The drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 but also with some drives it needs an exrernal power supply as the TV does not provide enough power, I am just popping out but will explain a bit better soon,

thank you....can your son watch videos on it? Formatting it to FAT32 now......the HDD says (on the box) USB powered, no need for additional power supply.....with a footnote saying one is available for comps that limit bus power (?)

Ill see if it works when formatted

Ahh, it might be just that then
externall HDD drives require more power than a flash drive, and can easily be fussy or not work on many usb ports

I would try a flash drive first. the ipod is happy as it is internally powered

If you really want to use this drive you can buy a cheap powered usb hub and connect it through that,
