Any mechanics/car experts here?

Just need a bit of advice really.

Apparently my brake fluid is contaminated - Ford have quoted me £40 to have it replaced. Is it worth doing and how urgent is it. What effect does it have?

I also need two new tyres. I've had quotes on Pirelli P3000 and some Firestones. The pirellis were about £15 cheaper for two tyres. Are Firestones better? Should I just pay the extra £15?

    Thanks

If your brake fluid is contaminated then yes I would get it done. ALL brake fluid is contaminated, but i depend son how contaminated it becomes. The more contaminated it gets, the more contamination happens until the brake fluid can't take any more water.

This has a knock on effect or corroding your braking system, seals braking down, which in turn, effects how well your brake system reacts. Also, the more contamination, the lower the boiling point on the fluid, which could in extreme conditions after much hard braking, cause a failure. It shouldn't ever get this bad though!

As for the tyres, depends on what you drive, where you drive and how you drive. No point sticking some really expensive performance tyres on a 1.1 pug 106 if all your going to do is pootle around town. Similarly, no point having loads of horses under the bonnet, wide tyres ad physcially using the power, but sticking budget tyres on.

They'll tell it's contaminated but I doubt it is..how old is the car?..it's quite easy to change yourself.

Have you tried www.blackcircles.co.uk for tyres?

They have to now. Imagine not telling the client and then they find out that teh crash was caused by containation, or it was at least a factor!

I always think with brakes, for the sake of £40, its worth doing. Obviously if the car is only a year old with 10k miles on it, ignore it.

If its 2 years old and has 20,000 TOWN or CITY miles, get it done.

If its 2 years old and has 20,000 motorway miles, forget it.

Just got a quote £18 cheaper than I did by phoning around! Thanks mate.

I'm going to get the brake fluid done as well. It's 2 years/20,000 miles since it was last done so I might as well.

Thanks for the info both of you.

worth looking in the voucher section as I'm sure there was 10% off for Black Circles recently..may have expired but worth checking.

Yes I agree with grdesign about the fluid..I change mine myself so it's an economic process.

10% has expired but they have just started a 5% discount for first time users. I think this is probably worth it's own thread - do you want to do the honours or shall I?
