Any old wives tales for dealing with an annoying cough???

Ok have had an annoying cough for few days now and am getting pig sick of it! I'm taking some poison that the Pharmacist gave me, but want to know if any HUKDers have any old wives rales they have used that speed up the recovery of an annoying cough?!?

Obviously if it doesn't heel up within a reasonable time I will re seek professional advice but any good old fashioned wives tales will be gratefully received!

My Grandma always swore by pig sick.

    Is it throaty or chesty

I always find that if i leave the window slightly open it allows fresh air in and it does not seem as stuffy and a bowl of water in the room, heard it catches the dust/dryness in the room, seems odd but seems to work

Also when i have a cold in general, sometimes just having a steaming hot bath then early to bed seems to work, it tend to often burn it at both ends so its usually brought on from being worn out

Thanks skellysGirl. Have window open but will also do the bowl of water.
Nikkib123 - really????? May be brave and give it a go! Cheers as well!

    Heres a few tips,

Hot milk with a teaspoon of honey (tastes quite nice too)

Vicks rub on the soles of your feet then put on a pair of socks and keep your feet up

Hope they do the trick, seems to be working for the wife especially at night

Apparently, if you stick your finger in your ear and give it a wiggle when you feel the need to cough, the feeling will go away.

Also, if you feel like you're going to faint, squeeze your bum cheeks together and it'll stop.

Also, if you're going to sneeze, press a finger on the indent of your top lip below your nose and the feeling to sneeze will magically go away (this one definitely works!)

RiPPeR - thanks. Have tried the vicks rub thing before and it didn't work for me but will try the hot milk & honey.
Degeneratemoo- LOL. Have just tried the wiggling finger in ear. Worked for a little bit!!! Was fun trying! I will persevere with this one as had laryngitis and obv coughing affects the larynx
Nikkib123-am having lots of vitamin c at the mo so when I go for a stroll to clear my airways, will pop into shop and get grapes

    Thanks for all the tips!!!!!

Old wive's tales that work are called 'medicine'.

What are you taking now ?

I'd suggest trying Pholcodine if it's a dry cough or Ammonia & Ipecacuanha if it's chesty.

I keep telling the wife to try some of my gentlemans relish.

Move to another room so that you don't annoy everybody else. (_;)

have a nice hot bath wid door shut so steam is breathed in, i also sip water throughout the day when i have a cold or cough

Heat some water up squeeze fresh lemon and 2 spoons of honey into it then alot of ground pepper, mix it, let it cool down to the point where you can just drink it, if you feel the pepper tingle on the back of the throat then its right if not add more, it will be gone by the next day

This seems like a remedy which has to be tried, it may work, it may not...but at least you can say you tried

Steam inhalation is the trick. Fill a basin with hot water, lean over it with towel over your head and inhale the steam to loosen mucus and moisten throat. Hope that helps x

Seriously(this time),my Gran always used the old whisky, lemon juice, honey and hot water(hot toddy, I believe she called it). Have you tried all our suggestions yet?! ;-) Get well soon!

OK thanks to everyone for all suggestions - alot made me laugh (which is prob the best medicine of all!) and i'm pleased to say i'm now on the mend!

I didn't try all the above but once again many many thanks!

I'll leave this open in case anyone else wants to put any other suggestions on for anyone else!!

Its not the cough that carries you off
Its the coffin they carry you off in
