Any PC bods help me out?

My PC is being a pain.

I have an Advent PQD5002, which I left on overnight to charge my ipod/download stuff etc.

Woke up in the morning and it had turned itself off. Turned it back on and when I get to the BIOS screen it says "mouse not found"? If you ignore the error, I just get a black screen.

Everything is plugged in fine, tried a different mouse and holding F8 to enter recovery mode doesn't work!

    Any ideas??

Normally the BIOS only checks for the Keyboard. That said, I am sure i have in the past seen an option to check for the mouse on POST.

Could be worth going in to the BIOS and resetting back to default?

Yeah, I tried that and it still picks it up.

I set it to ignore the error, and after picking up the HD. CD drive etc it just sits on a black screen after booting everything.

remove the power lead completely for 30 seconds, then re-boot

Sounds like a heat, hdd or software error to me.

Have you left any usb memory sticks in that may be set as primary boot device ?

Just a quick one, do you have any discs in the CD/DVD drives? My MAC G5 refuses to load when a CD is in the drive.

I did have a Sandisk card reader with an SD card plugged into a USB if that would count?

Best to disconnect anything with memory storage, inc printers, card readers and memsticks just to be sure.

Took this out and restored defaults, but still no joy?

ok take the battery out unplug power cord and hold power for 30 secs (this drains the board) then plug in the cord and turn on no bat (you will still have the error) shove in the bat whilst it is saying no mouse etc (must be on so as it makes a good connection) then turn off and on but once u pressed the power button to turn on hit f1 f2 and del in turn this will get you into bios no matter what computer you have.... the find a setting saying restore to defult (prob under the exit menu) save and reboot.... hope that all makes sense

I can get into the BIOS settings and I've restored them to defaults but it still brings up this error.

Will doing this be any different to entering the BIOS normally?

    I can't see this option?

What is it in connection with?

Is the mouse PS/2 or USB?

ok plug in a usb mouse and turn on usb emulation (god knows what menu its under with advant tho) also try disconnecting the hard drive and see if the error still pops up (it should moan about no hdd but if the mouse problem is still there that will stop it first as its checked first)

    USB.

I have tried with a PS/2 mouse though.

I've just noticed that it is showing "auto-detecting mass USB storage devices" and "00 mass usb storage devices found and configured" at the bottom of the post screen now.

    Any ideas? lol

No idea about finding USB emulation, been in all menu's and cant see it.

I'll try disconnecting the HD tonight.

Positive. Keyboard is PS/2 and mouse is USB.

Other than those two, the VGA and ethernet cables, nothing is plugged in at all.

No but I can enter the BIOS to access it.

I can see my HDD and select it from the boot menu.

On the post screen when the PC boots up, it confirms both the HDD and the CD drive.

Have unplugged the HDD and it still comes up with the error, although it doesn't pick the HDD up on the post screen,

It doesn't even moan that it's not connected!!!

try taking a stick of RAM out of it (if you have more than one) or taking the RAM out altogether

What version of Windows are you using?
Just wondering whether there's a way to copy the necessary driver files back in using the command prompt...

    Vista Home Premium.

ram trick might work if the ram is in error but wouldnt imagine so ..... ignore the windows comment tho as its not getting past POST and you still got it with no hdd attached so not a windows prob...... i would say duff board prob over heated during the night...... leave it on for 10mins the goto bios and see what temp the boad / cpu is at (if it can even got that option) take it back to whoever you got it from

You need to narrow down which component is causing it, you've tried the HDD, you've tried your peripherals, the RAM is the next logical option (then graphics card). Doing this just eliminates them from the process - i deal with these faults daily, i'm just saying what I do with a non-booting PC

I'm getting confused, surely the computer doesn't require a mouse during POST

Surely all signs are that the hard drive is corrupt? Do you have an installation disc you can try to boot from?
Change the boot preference order so it reads the DVD drive first of course.

Or you could try replacing the motherboard battery.

Tried the RAM trick, not having any of it.

What temp should the board be running at?

I've tried the boot preferences and it still picks up the HDD and no "clicky" noises to indicate it was on it's way out.
