looks like a standard IDE cable and 4 pin molex power cable the PC side

If you just have one hard drive in your pc you can connect this to the other plug on the same cablehttp://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/img/16837_ide-cable.gif

The adapter cannot connect to a PC because it is a proprietary adapter for your Archos board to enable PATA drives to be used. The good news is that the drive is a standard laptop PATA drive and the drive will fit into most older laptops with 40 pin connectors.

A desktop PC motherboard will have different sized PATA connections (using 44 pins) although these will be PIN compatible with 40 pin laptop sized PATA connections. If you wish to connect the hard drive to a desktop PC you need to map the hard drive's 40 pins to a desktop sized PATA connection via an adapter such as:

That's a standard 44 pin to 44 pin cable. The Archos hard drives have 40 pin connectors.

Yes, but it's still the same connector as a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive. There are 40 pins and the link refers to the correct adapter.

the 1.8 drive is a ZIF connection and what he has there is a ZIF to 3.5" pata connector like this one ,

No, the adapter converts a 40 pin PATA connector to a ZIF connector for the Archos board. A PC's motherboard does not use that type of ZIP connector as it is a proprietary connector. The hard drive use IDE electronics with a PATA interface, not a ZIF connection.

How do you expect that connector to enable the hard drive to be connected to a PC?

Yes you can. The ZIF connector makes no odds even if you buy another Archos model using a different type of connector (proprietary or not). As long as your new model of Archos accepts a drive using 40 pins the case can physically hold a 1.8 inch laptop hard drive there should be no problem at all.

So you are saying that you have dismantled a XS200 and that the drive inside is a PATA connection and not a ZIF connection like this

Oh I may have to stand corrected!

I think we need to start from the beginning, the HDD in the Archos Gmini xs200 is a 1.8" which uses a ZIF connection and the picture the OP posted is a ZIF to 3.5" Pata adaptor which i assumed the OP had already bought,If he wants to connect his HDD to a pc he will need one of these or he could just buy another xs200 and fit his drive inside it if he his any good with this kind of thing,i know it got a bit muddled there but the way the OP worded things made it a bit confusing .

Yes, agreed. What the OP has bought is the ZIF to 40 pin PATA adapter. If the OP buys the 40 pin to 44 pin adapter that was posted earlier then that will connect to the ZIF to 40 pin adapter that he has already acquired, although this 2 stage process is a bit more ungainly compared to the ZIF to 44 pin adapter you posted. Both options will work but given that the OP already has a ZIF to 40 pin adapter, then purchasing a 40 pin to 44 pin adapter for a desktop motherboard may be cheaper than purchasing another ZIF to PATA adapter.

I actually did understand the OP but I made the assumption that the adapter posted by the OP was for connecting the drive to a ZIF connector on the Archos motherboard. Maybe it is because there are still some questions to be answered because one would expect the hard drive to connect using ZIF to ZIF without the need for an adapter.
