    Any photoshop experts?

    Hey People

A friend just had a go on Adobe Photoshop using a tutorial found on this site however when she cuts the image and places it on another background its looks quite rough on the outline!
How can she smooth it out so it looks good as at the moment it looks obvious thats its been cut out an pasted.

    Any advice?

Use the freehand selection tool to manually select the outline on the new layer then blur it

I'll show you an example in Paint Shop Pro give me 5 minutes

If you need to smooth out the edges you'll want to use the 'blur' tool on a soft setting to just rub over the jagged edge and blend it in slightly. Keep taking snapshots along the way (on the history tab) so you can revert back if you over-do it at any point.

The more time you spend 'cutting out' the image with the select tool, the better the end result will be. I tend to zoom right in and really take my time. If you can start off with a high resolution image as well it really helps.

heres an example I did for a christmas card about 3 years ago!

    He isn't wearing any clothes ! He's Naked :w00t:

I was under the impression that for a smoother selection you should use the "mask" tool

Sorry to jump in here guys  but how much does this Photo editing software cost (Whats a good starter program) Thanks

Photoshop costs hundreds of £ but you will find that most people with it didnt pay.

Can you do any editing like taking cowboy hats of squirrels in photoshop elements 6? I bought this a couple of months ago but haven't got into it yet...:)

It'll be the same principle regardless of version, photoshop is a bit odd in that theres usually about 10 ways to do the same thing, and its hard to say which is better than the other, they all work. Personally I use the blur technique, you can also select everything on the layer, feather the selection, invert it, then blur or do as Rediron suggests and manually select the outline. Its all a matter of how good you need the end result to be and how long you've got!

I wouldn't say 'most'. Some people use it at work.

Yup, it has the select tools and the ability to cut, copy and paste so i don't see why not!

Ignoring the poor slection of images here's one i've just done using blur

The right hand side of the dog has been blurred into the background layer. The left side hasn't. It's not perfect as it was only a quick job but I believe that is what you're trying to achieve.

the rist thing I'd point out is that those images are faily low res and pixalated and would therefore be very very tricky to make it look authentic

I still maintain that the majority of copies on computers are of the pirate variety. Sure some pay, but there are thousands and thousands of amateurs out there that dont pay.

I would imagine there are, but I think you need to be careful in your phrasing so as not to sound like you're pointing the finger and specific people.

Lol. I didnt realise i was pointing the finger, i cannot be specific as i dont know who has and who has not paid for their copies.
I for one have never paid for it and dont see a problem with those who dont, unless they are making money from their creations.
