    Any roofers/builders out there?

My chimney needs pointing, had a quote tonight and the roofer said he'd just take the top of the chimney off (4 or 5 layers of bricks). It would leave some chimney that is fine at present (about 6 layers of bricks at tallest point of roof).

    Does that sound right?

I have a gas fire that uses the chimney/flue.

    Cheers

It is an aesthetic thing if you like the look go for it, if you don`t, pay for the pointing. It could be the mortar has deteriorated and it will be easier and cheaper to you, without seeing the job one really cannot pass judgement.
You need the flue open for ventilation therefore it is your call, however something should be in place to allow ventilation and prevent birds nesting and water deluge.
