Any Tips on stopping weeds growing through block paving?

Found 24th Jul 2012
Well, i've tried pretty much all of of the weed killer sprays available, but after a short period the bloody weeds come back.

Does any one have any tips on how to stop them, or if you have tried any effective weed killers which i may not have tried.

Thanks.

The soppy weedkiller from the garden centre is crap, I get my industrial strength stuff free from where I work. one spray session stops weeds for about 4 - 6 months.

Do you see council sprayers around your area. If so give them a tenner, and I'm sure they will do it for you.

You can't, well not legally. You need a spraying licence. Its toxic stuff.

Hmm! A bit difficult, it was laid by the house contractors about 12 years ago!
Have a look in the yellow pages, should be able to find someone who uses decent spray. Find out what they use first, you dont want to pay a decent price for something you can buy yourself.

Not sure about that, the block is on my driveway, and covers about 20ft by 10ft, could be quite costly.

I have seen the Jeyes range in the shops, but i thought they were more cleaners than weedkillers. Have you tried the Jeyes fluid as a weedkiller, and was it effective?

You could use an angle grinder to recess all the joints and then repoint the paving using a jointing iron. You could even change the mortar colour at the same time if you wanted, for example to bright red etc.
Have you considered moving house?

The concentrated stuff kills everything between my patio paving stones and I use it once every 3 or 4 months.

Don't get the one marked for patio cleaning.

Get the old fashioned concentrated one, which is more expensive but does a far better job.

Stinks to high heaven for a day or two but worth it.
Think you should get the tarmac boys round.

MMC Pro

Amazing stuff, and the professional version of their similar products, it'll nuke them and provide ongoing protection.

I use a pressure washer to thoroughly clean out the paver joints to about 1inch depth (hold washer at 45 degrees rather than vertically into the joints).

Then brush in fine sand and sprinkle with water then brush in some more until it sits level with the top of the blocks. This means you have no light penetration and no organic material for weeds to grow. Works for about a year so I do it every spring. Takes a good half a day to complete (40ft x 30ft drive)

Didnt bother this year and the weeds were running riot until I fed them some sodium chlorate (now banned!).

you cant re-grout block paving

would look a bit odd

Potato water. When you have steamed or boiled potatoes instead of throwing it away put it on weeds. It does work, maybe its the starch in it i am not sure.

Block pavers are never grouted in the first place, they are filled with kiln dried fine sand.

possibly not the right term used. i mean fill in the gaps between the paving. we do it with ready mixed mortar but it takes a long time to do.:3

we have a pointing party every summer.
My lock block driveway has this horrible green weed growing amongst (or directly from) the moss itself. This is the only problem as the moss itself is easily dealt with. I sealed the kiln sand with a sealant. Very few weeds but this green "pincushion" type weed makes life very difficult. Does this weed grow from the moss itself? Without exception all growth comes from above confirmed by the fact that the green weed doesn't extend the full depth of the lockblocks. Help! Any ideas on what might be a solution. I'm reserving judgment on the lockblock sealant.
