Hey all, I have a fiat punto that I use for motorway journeys (i know) lol.

It has its standard steel rims on it, 165/70/14

It has cheap tyres on it at the moment ,so I want to put quieter ones on it.

I also want the ride to be improved. Can I change the profile size from 70 to 60 or 65? will this be bad? or dangerous etc?

wont be bad or dangerous, the lower the profile, the harder the ride, also... making the combined wheel/rim size bigger/smaller will effect the readout on your speedo

ok, so what if i put the profile up a bit? say 75? would that do any harm. The speedo thing is minimal for what I want so im not too bothered.

im also after a quiet tyre.

I dont think yu'll notice any difference on a 5mm profile change, just checkout tyre reviews for some quiet ones + I dont think they make 165/75/14 tyres

The tyres you have on are fairly high profile by todays standards and changing profile is not recommended and could invalidate your insurance,It is possible to buy quieter tyres but these can be expensive,

Personally I wouldn't change the profile on the tyre if that is the original manufactures guidelines. Check your manual.

Autoexpress did a tyre test and from the results here

I would go for some decent branded tyres that perform well in wet/dry conditions and dont just focus on tyre noise.

In the size you mention 165/70R14T the following feature as Which Best Buys

Continental Eco Contact3

Bridgestone B330 Evo

Michelin Energy E3A

These makes of tyres are not far off the quietest tyres on the Autoexpress test.

Not sure where you are based but, if you can find a local independent tyre specialist they are usually best to offer advice on what you're looking for.

Too much expense involved in messing about with the profile - you just need a better tyre that's quieter as others have said - although you're never going to get a very quiet drive in a Punto!
