Anybody know anything about Air Conditioning? (Car)

I have a Ford Focus (2001) with Air Conditioning, however it doesn't work, and hasn't as long as we've had the car. There's no difference in the temperature of the air it blows whether it is on or off.

I've had a look around and read it could be the gas, but there's a valve under the bonnet, which i think is the aircon gas, and when it's pressed gas comes out, much like an air valve on the tyres.

Any ideas as to why its not blowing cold air?

I haven't really been bothered about it before, but we're going for a 6 hour drive to Cornwall in a couple of weeks, if it's hot I'm not sure how my 1 year old daughter will cope

Thanks in advance

and exhaust, dont forget the exhaust:whistling:
and clutch

just get them to test it then take custom elsewhere, or go informed of a local competitors price and ask them to match it, they often will but they will confirm it so dont make one up.

You can get it tested for free ]http//ww…ng/

Thanks, will ring a few places tomorrow.

Next question, what's more economical, driving 70 mph with aircon on, or with both front Windows open?

Also get them to check the pipes connected. Mine came loose so car couldnt be chilled

Don't forget they can leak, so re-gassing may work at first but could only last a short time. May not of course, just something to remember.

who cares...

depends more on if you like having the windows open at 70 mph!

Does anybody know if it's possible to get the aircon radiator repaired? I took mine in to be regassed and there's a leak but a new rad is hundreds of £'s. Can a small hole be welded over?

Which is more economical? Probably about the same but air con will be quieter, cooler and safer so for me it's a no brainer!

Its really hard to tell without inspecting the vehicle, it can be as simple as regasing the air con which doesnt cost much about £10-£30 try your local garages commercial ones like kwik fit are usually expensive. If its the compressor then it can be very costly depending on the vehicle parts and garage best thing would be to get it checked out by your local garage or a ford specialist.

Cheers, a bit annoying that i'll have to pay for it to be done and it might not work!!

When they re-gas is do they refill it, or re 'cool' it? As said above i thought that there was gas in there, definitely was pressure

Doesn't seem too bad to me, my local garage would charge about £50 just for a re-gas I bet, without even checking to see if there are leaks, performance testing etc. At the moment if mine wasn't working I couldn't live like it and would gladly pay a reasonable amount to have the comfort of A/C

They usually check for leaks and if the pressures ok they just add more gas into it. Shouldn't cost more than £50 I'm thinking.

Thats why I suggested visiting a Garage they can tell you what the problem is just hope its the gas.
From my experiance they refill it dont no what they mean by 'cool'

Probably have a leak in pipework somewhere, All aircon has to be run periodically say at least 30 minutes per month to lubricate the seals.
As for welding/ brazing over small holes then refilling the system with refridgerent think again cos the system has to be completely free of moisture.
