    Anybody own a Seat Leon?

    As above?

    Looking to change my 10 year old Focus, seems i can get a 5 year old Leon, 1.9 SE for about £4k, seems to look good (cheaper Tax, more MPG etc.) but would like opinions of people who actually own one?

    my brother used to have a leon, although not this model but it was a really good car and very reliable. have you looked on internet for reviews?

    Yeah, found a few from parkers and a couple of other places, not really used models though, just new models. I know every car is different but an idea of running costs would be good

    couldnt help on that one. my brothers never been one for economical cars. he has a focus st at the minute and only gets 23mpg :w00t:

    would a 5 year old one be the older shape? i wouldnt have thought a leon would cost a fortune to run but i could be wrong

    The 1.9 TDi 130bhp seems to get good reviews, i like the idea of a 1.9TDi 6 speed gearbox that gets 50+ MPG comfortably!

    I've just sold my five year old Seat Toledo which is exactly the same model as the Leon but has a saloon boot, I was sorry to see it go as it had been a great car pretty much the whole time I had it. Mine was fitted with the 1.9 TDI 150bhp engine which was a superb balance between performance and economy, it was quick midrange but easy to get good fuel economy and tax was just £115. The 130bhp is probably a better general engine as the turbo pickup and lag wasn't as harsh, although this engine is critcised by reviewers for its noise I didn't find that an issue as you only really notice it when idling with the window down. The advantage is that it's a well proven engine with lacks complexities like a diesel particulate filter which the newer engines have and I wish they didn't.

    Aside from the engine what sold me on the Seat was the handling as I found it much more lively and enjoyable than the Skoda/VW sibling cars. The one I had didn't feel just quite as well screwed together as the Skodas but over its entire time I rarely had any issues, a wheel bearing needed replaced and I had a leak in the boot (which was fixed in one go) but the rest was just routine wear and tear.

    £4k guessing thats the older shape, I was going to get one (07 plate) but went for a Golf instead, Leons are nice cars and have a nice drive to them.

    Good reliable cars, but on newer shapes turbo is an issue dont know about old shapes, if thats what your getting.

    I sold my 05 plate FR TDI in March.

    It was a fantastic car, but I needed something bigger (got a Freelander 2 HSE). SeatCupra.net is a very good site & an excellent knowledge base.

    Make sure the 5 year car your looking at has had its cam belt changed, as well as the plastic water pump for a metal propellor.

    Also check for wet floors (pollen filter put in the wrong way) - but as they are part of the VAG group, they are excellent quality build.

    They are easily modified, so if your looking to stay away from that side of things, just ask the seller if it has ever had a remap etc. My MK1 was running at 200bhp & 330lb's/ft torque (needed a Sachs racing clutch to cope with the torque).

    Thanks, Cambelt at 60k or 80k? The ones i am looking at are about 80-100k, seems that if looked after they will go 150k+. I only do 4k per year, so higher mileage isn't a massive issue for me.

    Re-Map is tuning your engine to give you better fuel efficiency and more Powerrrrr!!!

    Cam-belt needs to be changed at 80K and make sure got FSH so you know the history, these cars do come with mileage so make sure you check everything.

    You looked in Golf MK IV?

    60K? I thought 80K?

    On the diesel it is 60k or 5 years - whatever comes sooner.

    Most people dont take the age into account, but make sure it is changed EVERY 5 years, even if your not hitting the required milage.

    Cheers guys, will keep those points in mind. Anything else to look out for?

    I'm not a mechanic so the main issues I'm aware of are fairly obvious, make sure the car is in good condition, has been well looked after and not been hammered as they're popular with young males. Two of the ones I tried had clearly had hard lives and felt very 'loose' to drive and had noticeable scrapes and scratches inside.

    On a slight side note I much preferred my Seat to the Golf for the handling (even though the same platform) and I prefer the Seat's sharper looks over the 'dumpy' Mk IV Golf.
