Anyone been to dubai? Burj Al Arab afternoon tea in particular

Hi guys were off to dubai next week and im looking at going to the burj al arab (yes that one) for afternoon tea but its about 70 notes each and just wondered is it really worth that much? i know its that hotel but it seems a hell of a lot of cash to hand over for a few cakes and a pot of tea.
Also any advice for out there would be greatly appreciated

    many thanks

Went to dubai last year, fab place absolutely stunning in places, mind you dubai resembles a building site, new builds everywhere, but still absolutely love the place, people, foods etc etc..
some things you must do is the desert safari, your hotel should be able to book this for you, wonderful half day of dune bashing, campfire activities, barbecues, quad biking in the desert.
Also go to the mall of the emirates try the indoor skiing, if you like water activities try the wild wadi near jumeira beach hotel.
Also try the water taxis across the dubai creek only a few dirhams at night fabulous sights,#
there is loads of stuff to do let me know if you want.

make sure you dont get caught on the beach there though

That about sums it up, the old gold souk was worth a look too, I spent most of the two weeks I as there in the seamans mission though as it's the only real pub there. I know all the hotels have sports bars but god was they expensive

    Thanks

    hi mate,

When i went a few years back, i found the easiest way to get around was using the open top bus... it takes you to all the sites (malls, beach, shops etc) and has regular pick up times....

if you're after electronics/gold- buy them from electronic/gold souk rather than from the malls... you'll be able haggle and save loads of £'s!

check out the ]dubai page on wikitravel for more info!

    have fun!

ive been dubai 6 times and beleive me i just love that place.

you want to check the shopping malls out like emirates mall where they have the ski going on,

city centre mall i just love that too.

theres plenty of things to do in dubai, the people are good, the beach is lovley and can also vist wild wadi water park which is cool its right next to burj al arab,

how long are you going for?

dubai is expensive now am tempted to go again if i find a good deal

safiri is a must what ever you do.

and no bang bang on the beach ;-)

yeah try the open top bus but does not go all the little nooks and crannies to see the real dubai, taxis are cheapest and best option to get any where, friendly drivers know a lot of the place. cost me less than a tenner from jumeirah to old dubai in deira nr the gold souks, its about an hours journey by car, cheap, wish the petrol prices here were the same as dubai.

If you got time and cost permitting we went to oman doing a mountain safari and wadi bashing, great fun, food included at a 5 star hotel. hope it helps

its just how it fell to go for the opening of the atlantis, mind you given how hot its going to be im not too fussed of eating much and drinking beer in day time, cant wait for sun down though lmao

We went to dubai last christmas and tried to book the afternoon tea in the burj but it was fully booked.

This might of been because it was the christmas period, but you might struggle to book a place now. I would get onto it asap if your going to.

Taxis are so cheap and easy, the emirates mall is cool, but i didnt find the prices that cheap.
The big red bus tour is excellent, it covers all the main places and sights and you can jump on and off wherever you like.

Hi, already been speaking to them, got booked in, but looked like only a few slots left, well waiting on confirmation anyway, fingers crossed!!!

Was there any specific clothing rules for women? My OH is worrying about having to be covered up all the time, think she has visions she has to wear a burkha lmao

nah mate, dubai is quite a liberal muslim city, but since it is ramadan if you go to any mosques then suggest cover up legs for women and hair, bung a hat or scarf on.

take pounds, and convert it over there, believe me you will get a better rate there. theres plenty of these foreign exchanges dotted everywhere.

i had a 'snack' with the mrs on honeymoon 4 years ago. Cost over £100 for pasta, salad anf a couple of juices! They wont let you over the bridge unless you have collar and trousers!

try the lunch buffett, better value for money. £55 i think it was last time....

    correction - £85

I've been to Dubai too, it is a lovely country and you will have plenty to do in 4 days. Just one key piece of advice. Remember that you can not display any type of affection with your G/F in public or even in some hotels where there maybe Sheikhs. Basic holding hands, linking arms, kissings etc.. is a no no! Even though I was fully aware of this, when me and my boyfriend went to Dubai my OH decided to give me a kiss on the cheek just as we left our hotel room... before we knew it as the lift hit the ground floor and the doors opened, there stood a Sheikh pointing his finger at us saying.."excuse me no kissing allowed anywhere or you will be arrested." Bezeeeejus!!! I was on edge for the rest of our hoilday. I don't want to put you off but literally unless your locked in your hotel room with the curtains closed... pls don't get up to any hanky panky!!

As for female dress code... tshirts are fine, dont expose your shoulders. Wear either long trousers or long skirts. You may get away with 3/4 lenghts but nothing above the knee. And for the men??? well you lot are sorted... just do not go topless!!!

    Above all.... Have fun guys!

yeah best bit take some money with you from here and cash it in at dubai airport you might get little less but if you have any left over they will buy of you at the rate they sold you the AED.just make sure you keep the receipt.
i have a cousin who actually works in dubai only if i had his number i would get him to look after you when you come to burj al arab

make sure you drink plenty water as it will be very hot,u will be fine in shorts but to be on the safe side just take trackies etc.

    what hotel you stopping at?

I lived in Dubai from 1998-2000 - a lot has changed since then but I have always wanted to go to the burj al arab!

Went last year awesome place, most attracttions seem to have been mentioned here apart from the Ibn Batuta shopping Mall.

    ok- accommodation?
There are 2 'panorama' hotels- one in deira (the older side of the creek on the right) and one on bur dubai. Both are reasonable 2ish star hotels- about 30-35 a night- go thro ]hotelscomparison.com to find the cheapest agent and then go via quidco
Hiring a car? well- the traffic can be EVIL 24 hours a day- a cab might be great alternative and cheap (basically the minorities drive cream coloured cabs-always metered and very reasonable.)
If you stay in the panorama in bur dubai then ]carhire3000.com is best for car hire, £15 a day- no excess and return tank full. Dont 4get quidco!! Pm if u wanna ask stuff! dan

given the price of a room id say 70 pounds each is wrth it. specially when u see the place, and what thet serve u up. once in a lifetime

were staying at the new atlantis on the palms, it opens the day we arrive, can wait!!!

got our booking for afternoon tea confirmed now, got a quote to get a transfer in their rolls royce phantom, but at over 170 notes one way that isnt going to happen lmao

One of the best restaurants we went to was therupeeroom.com.

It is located at the marina walk and it was superb.

In fact, the marina walk was great for restaurants, plenty of choice.
After you have eaten, you can just chill outside, have a drink, smoke and relax.

I would also recommend paying a visit to the Karama if you like your designer, clothes, bags, sunglasses etc

It is a bit scary at first, they will try and get you into the shop to have a look, then they ask if you would like to see specific designer stuff ie bags, belts etc, then they knock one of the doors, the door opens, which then leads to another door, then to an old tiny staircase until you arrive in the rooms full of all the designer stuff locked away.

They arnt pushy, so if your not interested just walk away being polite, no problems at all.

Came home with 4 lacoste polo shirts, approx £7 each....
    Gucci and guess bags....
    Armani shoes....

Yes the quality isnt the best...but for those prices and just the fun of being in the shops its worth every penny !!

    Enjoy.

I worked out there for a while some years ago - has and will always be a bit of a building site! - Are the usual taxis still air conditioned mercs?

They were just building the Burj when I was out there but it looks impressive, you only live once and there are no pockets in a shroud, etc... enjoy it!

On the subject of Omega watches though, you should go the Fishawi in Khan al-Khalili in Cairo - You'll get one a tenner if you haggle enough!
