Anyone BETA testing Firefox 3?

If you are, try typing about:robots into the address bar. =)

That's "about:robots" without the quotation marks. Don't forget the colon.

It's good. Most extensions are working with it now, too (although Google Toolbar still isn't).

It's now in the RC (Release Candidate) and not a BETA, meaning that it's finished but is still being tested. You can download it here:

thanks duckmagic, didn't even know there was a firefox 3 on its way. Installing as we speak

Nothing happened when I typed "robots" in:thinking:..........I'm running beta 5 at the moment.

Missed the : out:thumbsup:

The address bar is the one that will affect people most. You no longer have to type in the address... once you've visited a site you can just begin typing the site name and it'll appear, and you can go straight to different pages.

So if I type "hotukdeals freebies" I can go straight to the freebie section at HUKD.

More on that here:

Yes, I think the new address bar is one of those features that in time you will think, "how did I ever get on without it?" Very good for us males with a (bad) man-memory

Yeah, I keep going back to Opera and trying to type web addresses in.

For a long time now, firefox has had that great thing where if you type a name of a website into the address bar and you haven't visited it before then it'd do the equivalent of Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky", meaning that it'd invariably take you to the site which you were actually after, which I couldn't live without either.

Ewww this sucks, my other firefox was faster and i cant even bring over my aero theme booooo

but it has always done that. If I type BB in the address bar then every site beginning bb appears in a drop down.

This includes page titles, so it works even if the name of the page is different to the URL.

For example:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/h…stm
"Historic pictures sent from Mars"

If I wanted to find that page then I could just type "Mars Pictures" and it'd come up, even though the domain web address is totally different.

I agree duck. Ive been using it for a while now and it just seems logical to use the address bar as a type of search engine now.
The only problem I've hadded with this beta is the slow booting up time.

Original Poster

I've not really had a problem with that. Do you have the latest version of the BETA?

Help > Check for Updates

yep got the latest version. probably just my pc.
another cool feature of it is the smart bookmarks tab as well where you can see your most visited sites

Original Poster

Also, the ability to save a browsing session when you close (if you have multiple tabs open, you can choose to have those same tabs open up again when you next load).

Has the "open recently closed tabs" feature always been there, or is that new too? I like it!

There has always been a "closed tabs list---> restore all tabs" function. Right click on a tab to get these options.

Not sure what the difference is between "protect tab" and "lock tab" though.

I've not got "Protect tab" and "Lock tab". Could they be from extensions you've installed??

Ooops! yes it is.

Its called TAB MIX PLUS which is a great extension as it Colorfultabs (color coded tabs according to personal settings (e.g HUKD tabs appear green, lovefilm red etc).

Maybe we should have a thread for favourite firefox extensions......................

an example of the two extensions below:-

They've implemented a lot of things that I used to have in extensions (like Save Session & Exit).

Which is good really - as extensions only really exist to fill in holes in Firefox itself.
