Anyone else's car insurance gone up this year?

My renewal just came through the post and it's gone up 60% even though I haven't made any claims, I thought I was going to pay less this year because I turned 25 last year but it's the opposite. Are they ripping me off or has everyone else's increased?

Ours has gone up by £100 and they have increased the excess too. Have shopped around and found it alot cheaper elsewhere.

Mine's gone DOWN this year, even though I have 6 points more on my license than I did LAST year (that's with the same company - Elephant), which I found MOST odd!

Unfortunately, the old "you get to 25 and it'll be cheaper" line is no longer valid. Mine went up at 25, and up further at 30, and only started coming down after 35.

disagree, my insurance company Privilege called it the "Magic 25" and i got my cheapest quote from them i was with Churchill before you need to haggle these things

EDIT: Although this was last year.....

Go online and get a quote from your insurer as if you were a new customer. If it comes up cheaper than your renewal phone them and ask that they match it.

Also, shop around. I used to be with Direct Line, now with Sainsburys as they wanted £115 less when it was time for my renewal....

OP - Go to a compare site and see what others are quoting..

I lot of company renewals are through the roof this year following the large amounts of snow in 2009/2010.

However, if you get fresh quotes, you get the best discounts around..

I have just looked at some quotes today for a new car... and im looking at around £500

    What car have you got?

mine went up around 50% but negotiated it down to a 25% increase. Went from £87 to £120 a year. Too many uninsured drivers on the road. Grass them up if you know any or just accept continual increases!

Thanks guys, I'm with direct line with 6 years no claim. It's only a 1.4 Astra and they want £575 this year! No wonder there are so many driving uninsured these days as people seem to get penalised for paying insurance and doing nothing wrong.

I had a look at confused.com but they've all come up more expensive

Mine went up £50 even though I was a year older and had another year's no claims.

Try MoneySuperMarket and GoCompare as well as Aviva.

mine went up by 600 pounds from 1000 to 1600!!!!!!! This was with directline and I'd had no points, if anything I had lost 6 as these should have expired in the intervening year. 1 phone call later though and they matched it to what I was paying last year the cheeky gits. I'm sure some just bump the price up in the hope that people will just shut up and pay up. I'm 28 btw

It could be just due to your postcode.... if there have been a lot claims for theft it would also hike up the price..

Insurance companies will negotiate. My renewel was £160, they reduced it to £130 and I got cahsback too on it to bring it just over the £100 mark. Quotes from comparison site ranged from £130 to over £800. Quite staggering - I have been driving for years, no points and full no claims, sensible family car with low-ish annual mileage. So do shop around, the difference could be significant.

mine went down £110 for the year...good times

My insurance was almost the same, but I called the insurer and asked if they could do anything better - got £70.00 knocked off.

    I pay £9K for car insurance. :-(

You should all be glad your not 17, £1300 after haggling for a 1.1 litre 12 year old car :x, and i have never made a claim in my life, or have any pionts on my linence lol

bewilders me that they now issue standard fines for first time offenders of £200 for no insurance. Make it £1000 and then see a rush for insurance! :w00t:

not VERY old but not in my twenties either ;-)

area is very low on crime (Shoreham-by-sea). A car probably gets stolen about once a year and would make the local paper's front page! :w00t:

Just remember - Loyalty Never Pays

Just renewed mine, found somewhere slightly cheaper but also £75 cashback. Never stick with the same company for any insurance.

Im with direct line and received my renewal today, £25 more than last year, never had any claims, however if i cancel and take out a fresh policy with them its the same price as last year , saving £25,anyone see any problems in doing this?

ErrorOperator, who did you get insurance with? i'm 19 and my cheapest qoutes have been £3000 with a 1.0 litre corsa. What car have you been haggling with and what kind of haggling do you do?

Yes, my insurance did go up this year. I contacted the broker who told me that it was a reflection of how many claims had been made to the whole industry , however they did knock of their commission We are also very limited with who will insure us, because although the car is badged with the Vauxhall griffon, but the docs have it as an Opel. This seems to give 95% of insurers carte blanche to double the premium as they classify it as an import...Grrrr

Everyone's insurance has gone up I think.....really struggled to get a cheaper quote for my hubby's car....really can't see that many Zafira's get nicked by joyriders.

Personally I think it's all down to the amount of greedy people who claim whiplash after a minor knock and then take themselves to the nearest ambulance chasing solicitor to claim thousands off insurance companies!
