Anyone ever managed to get file sharing between two vista PCs working properly?

    Banned
I have a wired desktop running vista business

I have a wireless laptop running vista home premium

both are running comodo firewall and have windows firewall OFF.

I have enabled file sharing under networking and via media player 11 on both

The problem is I can see the wired computer from the laptop but not the other way around. They can both share MEDIA files as they are showing as media file sharing icons.

Under networking on the wired computer I can see the laptop as a COMPUTER so can access any shared FOLDERS.

Under networking on the wireless computer I cannot see the laptop as a COMPUTER so cannot access any shared FOLDERS (I can see it as a media file sharing device but this is no good for file sharing).

Googled around for ages but nothing seems to help.

    Anything obvious I'm missing here?

    Thanks.

Gave up on that one, though when I put Live one care on both PCs it did pick up my printer and share it which is handy.

why do MS make it so difficult to share files across a private network? Drives me mad!

Vista gets me with its "do you wanna do that" "you sure" "no realy are you realy sure" "ok but only if your sure" LoL like it better than XP now tho

Didnt know it was difficult, i just set up like i did with xp i think, all vistas here fine and vista to xbmc machines also fine. Didnt do anything flash with any settings.

I have a feeling it is premium has incompatibility issues with the business edition

I've just got vista, and that was driving me mad within 10 mins. look ]here for info how to stop it, its great, now it does what I say when I say it! lol

I think Vista's sharing is far better than XP's. I am sharing with the only other Vista PC on the network perfectly fine, and with the other XP machine. They are both Vista Ultimate though, so the same.

Have you changed the network from Private to Public? Or other way round...can't think of the top of me head!

Try doing it as a public network...thats about as much as I can suggest at mo!
I have file sharing between 3 Vista PC's at home. I can take a look later to see what the set up is like and feedback to you on here...?

I have my Vista PCs (Home Premium, Ultimate and business) all sharing files between the XP machines (Home and Pro) - the only issue I had was authentication which Vista enables but I didn't want as there's no domain. With that disabled it all worked fine, just make sure you are using an open network profile rather than trying to open up a locked down profile (such as public)

No idea what you mean TBH by saying you disabled vista authentication.............

It's called 'Password protected sharing' and it's an option set for Vista file shares, with it set I find it's tricky to get shares working (in a workgroup environment) but disabled it all works fine.

yep - already turned off password protection. I'll just get by as i can still put files into the shared folder between the two (i.e keep a shared folder on the laptop and move files into and out of that folder).

not ideal but saves me spending any more hours on this.

    thanks all anyway.

without reading the thread and only the initial question, my laptop and my gf's laptop started filesharing on there own, i was on mine, she went on hers, a windoe appeared asking if i wanted to share, i said yes and that was it. i could access her pics, music, videos etc. weird. i think vista works with some kind of voodoo magic.

sharing files between 2 wireless pcs running vista ultimate and my 360. only problem I had was using media centre on the 360 but just use the dashboard to get the files now.

I would love to do this too....Sorry I don't want to thread hijack...but this file share between vista is it secure? can it be password protected? so e.g. a neighbour having access etc

yeah, thats for sharing media files via media player. mine and other laptop share those files fine.

Sharing other folders is more tricky as you have to see each other's pc as a COMPUTER rather than a media device. only works one way on mine but can still share a folder on laptop so a bit more hassle but as a workaround will suffice.
