your dads car will most probably be found by the police in a few days wrapped around a lampost or in a ditch.

what car was it, people cant really look out for a number plate only, make model colour 3 door 5 door etc etc

cant see it being joyiders tbh, they actually came in the house and took the keys ! i think anyway , the way op has described it, scary !! oO

yay smilies working now , when did that happen ? not as good as old ones though !!

Add the details to the Stolen Cars thread at PistonHeads:

Sorry to hear about this, but I'm glad that apparently no-one seems to have been personally harmed, threatened or worse.

By the way, was the car parked on a driveway? Did they break a window to get in or was it already unlocked? And what area/city is this?

Best wishes to you and your Dad. Perhaps get a good alarm system and other anti-burglary and security measures to act as possible deterrents? Hope something like this never happens again.

It's horrible when something gets stolen, a real breach of your privacy, you were so lucky your house wasn't burgled of all your personal possessions.
I hope that the police find it for you, maybe you could do something like contact your local radio station and tell them about it, they might be interested?
I hope your father had fully comp insurance, you should make sure he contacts them tomorrow morning with the crime reference number and all the details.

There are tales of insurance companies failing to pay up in situations where the keys are hanging up in the hallway as they were not secure.

    Hope you have no hassle.

that only applies if they can be stolen without breaking into the house.

    not really

Was the front window left open big enough for anyone to just squeeze through?

No hate to the OP (I drive a focus after all)

But why would you break into a house specifically to steal an 02 plate Mondeo?

    Seems rather random.

might have been worth it if it was a porche

Vibe thats the point its probably not been sold for selling on, and Tracyhay, yeh stealing a beetle isn't worth it as they have a tracking system, that is linked directly to the police.

Vibe probably being stolen for a robbery or messing about in.

lol remind me not to steal one of those then!

More than likely stolen to order to repair an identical write off or even to ring.

Years ago I went into my car and in space of 5 seconds I noticed my rear view mirror wasnt there...................then I realised someone had stolen my WINDSCREEN!!!

When the police arrived the guy had me in stitches. I said "all my cd's are still there, you would have thought they would have taken everything" the officer replied "there isnt much demand now for Jason Donovan CD's" X)

please note - I DID NOT have any Jason Donovan CD's X)

not long ago down my street some men were wandering down suspisciously so we contacted the police. Anyway, 10 minutes later a taxi arrived and the men asked the taxi driver to help them get their bike in the boot, so he helped. Seconds later both the men jumped into the taxi and drove off leaving a woman to snatch the bike and cycle off!! They also burgled one of the houses too.

lol! i remember getting into my first car, and thinking somthing wasn't right, drove to the doctors thinking sure that door isn't right, really cold in here, i was talking to the doctor then it clicked in my head, i randomly said someone has tried to break into my car, went out side had a proper look, huge foot print on the side of my door and the top of the door bent.....loved that nissian sunny

As I understand it, older cars are easier to break into but most cars made in the last 10years have alarm and immobiliser systems.

Most car theft now is either keys being nicked and/or car jackings, NOT geniunly broken into as defeating those new systems are very hard.

Feel free to correct me if I'm talking rubbish.

We use a Thatham wheel lock, while still defeatable, means adding minutes and further risk to any robber, assuming you don't have that key on the car key ring

Because as the OP said they're common as muck - much easier to get away with than a more expensive newer or something a bit more exotic. I used to live in a fairly wealthy area of Edinburgh and was surprised that my 93K 1.1S Rover Metro was the target for theft despite being possibly the cheapest car in the area. The police pointed out that because Metros were so common they were quick and easy to nick and sell on or do whatever with which was worth it despite the lower profit against taking a more expensive car.

Not surprising considering you had a £93k motor (_;)

When I was about twelve or thirteen I was sat in my grandparents council house on my school dinner break with a good view of the street outside. I watched the elderly neighbour pull up in his car and get out with the engine running to I suppose drop something off. Just as he comes back from doing whatever he was doing this little toerag jumps in the car and attempts to drive off. The neighbour runs over and tries to pull him out put the little **** stuck it in reverse to shake him off then drove over his legs breaking them both. Meanwhile i'm sitting in stunned silence with pot noodle dribbling down my chin as all this happened in seconds.

Are you sure you didnt take it out with you last night and forgot where you parked it?? ;-)

Where abouts in the country are you???

    Surrey by any chance?

Sorry... DLM was right, we are in Preston, Lancs.

The window wasn't shut properly probably enough to get a finger under to pull it open!!

Post Code Insurance Groups - Postcode Risk Assessment List

Every area in the United Kingdom is risk assessed by insurance companies based on their crime and claim statistics. Your post code can have quite a substantial effect on your insurance premium even if you are a very safe driver.
    Insurance Grouping by Postcode

    A = Low Risk
    F = High Risk
    * = Any motor cycles in areas D, E or F must be garaged in a locked and secured building whilst at the policy holders address. In some of these areas this also applies to cars.

Nah we have air con, but I wanted fresh air :P

    Dear lord. Let's recap:

    1) You post saying your dad's car got stolen, asking for help.
    2) You neglect to mention the city, what kind of car it is, and what colour it is. You do however give us the car's numberplate.
    3) You subsequently do give us all the information about the car and where it was stolen from. Not that anyone here has a shred of a chance of finding it, mind your
    4) You then, having given every detail about the car, confess that the keys were probably stolen because the window was left open enough for someone to get through

In short, you've gone from giving us zero information with which to find the car, to giving your dad's insurance company all the information they need to not pay out on the claim. All they need do is google the numberplate.

    Epic fail.
