Anyone help with gaviscon cool for children?

My daughter is 4 and half and has been prescribed gaviscon cool but she refuses to take it and is now lying about her heartburn so i dont give her the medicine.

She gets so upset and refuses to take any...

She used to have gaviscon powder in her milk when she was a baby for reflux... can she have that now? or is she too old?

Does anyone know if i can mix it with anything to make it better?

Can't you get Gaviscon in different flavours? Maybe try a different one?

i rang NHS direct but the recorded msg said they are only dealing with urgent cases.

The only medicine she will take is calpol.. had to mix her orange anti biotics a few months ago in her juice.

Talk to a pharmacist in the chemist, they will tell you how you can manage this.

Highly unusual for a 3 yr old to have heartburn, has she had tests done recently.?

If she is not having any symptoms, she does not need it.

You can use the powder. It is not as effective but will do her more good than nothing. My daughter has had something similar and would only take the powder.

I'd consider using a syringe, like the one they provide with Nurofen.

Try peppermint cordial, milk and cooled boiled water, not filtered but straight from the tap. They seem to work well as alternatives to gaviscon.Hope this is of some help.

    Thanks for all your help..

Shes been getting pains in her chest and they were becoming regular to a point it was atleast once a day, i took her the drs and she prescribed gaviscon cool 3 times a day and as a when needed. I thought this seemed a bit extreme?

    Tried the syringe ... :-/

Will nip to the pharmacy tomorrow and see what they say.. thanks

i dont know if you can mix it with anything but i have the same problem with the little man he wont take any medicine ARGH!!!! last night he was screaming for about an hour over earache and when i forced medicine in his mouth (might sound harsh but i had to do something) he just spat it out, then i have discovered dissporal wow they really do dissolve lol and know he has had them twice in his juice and not even noticed woop woop. last thing you want as a parent is to see your child suffer yet how frustrating is it knowing if they take this nasty tasting medicine within half hour they will be fine and dandy. hope your little one gets better soon x

I would suggest the powders, but also try some infacol, it is usually only for wind, but this may help. Also, I think rennie's are ok for kids, it would be like her having a mint to chew on.

I got heartburn really badly when I was pregnant, but couldnt stand the liquid or tablets.... then I discovered ]these, I would ask my doctor if she would be able to take them!

They are like chewy sweets! The advice on them is advisory, and 12 and up, but it wouldn't hurt to ask the Doc if she could. Heartburn is awful, hope you sort this!

Gaviscon can be taken three ways, either eaten through powder, swallowed in liquid format, or, since it is also used to treat heartburn in cattle, injected directly into the heart with a 2ft long vet's syringe. If she's too old for the powdered stuff and unwilling to take the liquid, I guess you might have to resort to the third option. Run the choices past your daughter first though, see which one she wants to go for.

    Wink.

To be honest, not really. Something to do with excess acid and unprotected organ linings, isn't it? I just wanted to scare a small child into submission is all

dxx - heartburn is nothing to do with the heart - it only gets that name because the pain seems to come from that area - it's due to the excess production of acid in the stomach and the reflux caused by this acid building up. This reflux comes up the oesophagus sometimes into the mouth.

Yeah, but if a 26 year old doesn't know that, then a four year old's got no chance.
