I really want to go on a gap year to asia (although my folks arent too keen, they want me to go after uni - is that normal?). How much do you think it would cost for 6months travelling. How much planning did you do? Did you book it all out before you went?

Thanks for all your help and rep of course!

cost alot man! i travelled and worked in american when i was 18, you should really take a month to plan for every month you are gonna be their.

Tons of websites that you can sign upto and talk to people who are also interested in doing it. Places to stay, ppl to go with all sorts. Need any info just ask.

]all about asia to travel

You can go with project Trust.

Had a talk at school with a woman repreenting them. You do your own fundraising etc. I was going to do it too but i have decided not to because i know i wont go back to university.

mine is only 16 and she already is talking about uni, i dont know what the hell im going to do if she goes, i feel like im dying inside when she just talks about it, heavens knows what ide do if she came home and sais she was traveeling the world :oops:

my friend moved away to uni at 17, not to make you more worried, but i can honestly say it was a great thing for him to do, he gained so much life experience and from what you have said about you daughter she seems to have a well strung head on her shoulders so im sure she would be highly responsible and make you proud no matter what she done:thumbsup:

i wouldnt p-lan too much because things might change
certainly get an idea of the places you intend to visit but doing things by the book certainly takes the fun out of things when you get there.
you might like one place too much and stay a bit longer or you might hear of a place via friends you meet and recommend it
play it by ear and be a free spirit

I went for a year but I did work in Australia when I did it. when I did Asia I went for 2 months and took £2000.
That was in 2000. I went to Australia worked and saved toured Australia and took $5000 (about £2500) for 1 1/2 month travelling Oz. Went back to Asia for 1 month and took £1000.
I based it on £1000 per month. Seemed to do me fine. Out partying most nights apart from when I saved hard for a few months in Oz.
Never booked anything before I went. Just had my flights. Its best to go into hotels and ask what there rates are in Thailand etc as you will get a better deal. Booked all my travel (flights/boats/trains) when I was there. You get much better deals.

nice. i dont plan on going there to get wasted - prob not the most sensible thing when travelling! i think i may need to persuade a friend or two to go with me...

i went to HK, thailand and malaysia this summer with family so i'm used to the place. do people book accomodation in advance or just as you go along? i think thats my biggest problem

oh i know hun, thankfully she will be nearly 17 when she leaves school, so i think its 2 or 3 years at sixth form, so she be at least 20 before shes thinking along them lines, and although i know she is dead sensible it dont stop me worrying, im already fretting and its possibly 4 years away, it makes me feel sick at the thought

sorry to op for waffling

no im not saying get wasted but when you look at the price of a beer its about the same price as a meal so it makes a dent in your pocket

as for places go via recommendations
have a look in lonely planet and see reports suggestions there
i used to just go from one hotel to the next with my back pack on
with internet nowadays its easy to book but i never used to do that
thats not entirely back backing

i wish this had never been posted! i now cant stop thinking about going to China to teach english! Then start uni a year later with a year of teaching already under my belt i should get into a teaching degree no bother! I hope lol

oh man i wanna go soooo bad!!!

no need for apologies its a good thing haha

when i went to america i thought i wanted to jst travel and move around and see here and their and everywhere. After i got the first job tho i didnt want to leave ended up their for around 8 months and still got travelling done with locals! you should defo do it mate its amazing

i trravelled the world and worked there for over 14 years so i know what youre feeling.i jsut wish more young people took up this opportunity of a lifetime rahter than getting commited and having babies

5-6k for basic accommodation and a few trips etc etc and a credit card for emergencies(essential)

Dont plan too much as you will bump into people and want to change your plans all the time, lots of budget asian airlines for hopping form country to country as well so just a fight to Bangkok,Singapore or Hong Kong will suffice

Also pack very very light loads of cheap clothes available to get you through your travels they you can just chuck away....get a Lonely Planet guide book as well for further info

PM me if you need anything further:thumbsup:

I have travelled both alone and with friends, dont worry, lots of people go alone, you will meet people and make friends out there dead esy

i went alone and personally i would always go alone...could you imagine being away with someone and then they start to get homesick....what a downer it would put on your day.week.month. its a 100% defo that you will meet people

you can do it as cheap or expensive as you like really, you can pick up the odd job along the way

round the world tickets you can pick up for about 8-900 these days, hostels are basic but great places to meet like minded people, and can be as cheap as a fiver a night !

go for it, you wont regret it and wont wanna come home !

first few times went with frieends around europe
was a nightmare some cant tell their form their elbow and always have to decide where what to do next
if your on your own youre a free spirit and can do what ever you want and go where ever you want

loads of people are doing this and u'll never be alone.

you never know you might meet a bird out there
i met a stunning israeli girl in nepal and we went through india thailand and australia together.

sorry - final question! did you guys travel before or after uni? i'd prefer to go before but my parents say after

I got my education sorted first

my mate went to asia when he finished uni, its a good way to destress after examines and stuff. When i left i went straight in to work and wish i had done something like that. The only thing i would say is that Uni opens your mind to alot of new things, living alone, other people, cultures etc and both my mates and i agreed that going before uni might have been a bit of a cultural shock after being used to western luxuries and home comforts for want of a better words for so long. After uni you can appreciate it so much more i feel. My mate bought a flight from London to Tokoyo, and then booked the return flights from Sydney for a date six months in the future. So he basically had the outbound and return flight booked before he went and had six months to get from tokyo to sydney, 'by any means' etc. Really good experience as you live on a day to day basis and arnt restricted by time.

thanks. that sounds really good.

i think with my parents i will have to go to uni first anyways. if i get onto the course i want to (economics at nottingham) i get the opportunity to study in Kuala Lumpur for a semester meaning i can have 4/5months practice. unfortunately i'm going to need 3 A's for that course!
